Adult Swim’s adaptation of Junji Ito’s groundbreaking horror manga Uzumaki is a long time is coming. For how long, you ask? The four-episode miniseries has been delayed not once, not twice, but three times since it was announced in 2019. The wait is almost over, though, as Adult Swim shared a new trailer for the anime on Friday, which will premiere during Adult Swim’s anime-focused Toonami block on September 28.
The four-episode adaptation follows the story of Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito, two high school students living in the quiet Japanese town of Kurouzu-cho. When a series of disturbing incidents related to a mysterious “spiral curse” begin to plague the townspeople, Kirie and Shuichi must find a way to survive amid the horrors in the hopes of saving themselves and their loved ones.
Hiroshi Nagahama (Mushi-Shi And Flowers of Evil)is the management of the Uzumaki anime, which is produced by Japanese animation studio Drive (To your eternity season 2). Moreover, Heir apparent composer Colin Stetson composes the score.
There have been many anime adaptations of Junji Ito’s work in the past, most fans of which will agree are more misses than hits. Will Nagahama’s Uzumaki anime finally break the curse of subpar Junji Ito anime? We’ll have to wait – just a small a little longer — until the series premiere to find out.
Uzumaki premieres September 28 on Adult Swim and streams the following day on Max.
