The Little Mermaid becomes the highest fan-rated live-action Disney movie of all time after grossing a whopping $118 million in its opening weekend
The Little Mermaid reboot has become the highest-rated live-action Disney movie on the fan review site Rotten Tomatoes.
The musical, which was released Friday, currently has a 95 percent approval rating from more than 5,000 viewers.
It surpasses the previous record held by Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, which has a viewing rating of 57 percent.
The live-action remake, which is also mixed with CGI animation, stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as sea witch Ursula, and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
Despite a backlash over Halle’s casting, the film topped the No. 1 box office over Memorial Day weekend with a whopping debut grossing an estimated $118 million.

The film is expected to gross $118 million in domestic markets, making it the fifth-highest Memorial Day opening in history, per Variety.
Last year in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick became the highest-grossing movie to debut over Memorial Day weekend for $160.5 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
One person who contributed to the sale was Halle herself, who went to see the movie in theaters, but in full disguise.
She documented her escapades on TikTok and showed her more than two million followers how she managed to blend into the crowd.
Halle put on a face mask supposedly for COVID-19 reasons and, as an added precaution, obscured her face even further with sunglasses.
Despite winning over audiences, the film has scored mixed reviews from critics and currently holds an approval rating of 67 percent.
While some pundits claimed it was close to “the best live-action Disney movie” and praised Halle’s performance as Ariel, others insisted it “can’t” escape its animated legacy.
Halle also revealed how she broke down watching videos of kids gleefully reacting to her role of Ariel in the live-action movie The Little Mermaid.
The actress, 23, discussed the black portrayal in the film during an interview with Glamor magazine.

During the chat, Halle touched on the emotional videos of young girls seeing a black woman as a Disney princess and how she managed to maintain her own identity while filming for the remake.
When asked about the videos, Halle said, “When I first saw those, I just cried. I sobbed uncontrollably. The fact that these babies look at me and feel the emotions that they feel is really humbling, beautiful.”
She compared the feeling when Anika Noni played Rose Tiana in The Princess and the Frog in 2009, saying, “I know how much that movie changed my whole outlook on life. Wow, this is possible. Black princesses are possible.
She added: “We deserve to occupy these spaces as well.”
Guess who? One person who contributed to the sale was Halle herself, who went to see the film in theaters, but in full disguise
