The Latest: With the debate behind them, Harris and Trump jockey for swing states

Vice-Chairman Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump are headed to states they hope to win. Both states are trying to widen their narrow path to victory in a fierce presidential campaign.

Harris has her sights set on North Carolina, where she will hold rallies in Charlotte and Greensboro on Thursday.

Trump is heading west to Tucson, Arizona, as he looks out for stabilize his campaignwho is still struggling to reposition herself nearly two months after Harris replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket.

ā€œ60 Minutesā€ is scheduling its quadrennial interview special with the presidential candidates to air in less than a month, hoping for the best even after its 2020 session with former President Donald Trump went off the rails.

With no other debates between Trump and his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, scheduled after Tuesday’s event in Philadelphia, a “60 Minutes” session would be one of the few opportunities for voters to evaluate the two candidates head-to-head.

The Sunday newspaper wants to do that on Monday, October 7, because CBS will broadcast the American Music Awards the night before.

Neither candidate has yet committed to appearing, but their campaigns have spoken to CBS, said Bill Owens, executive producer of “60 Minutes.” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said “stay tuned” when asked about his candidate’s plans. Harris’ campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

Young women are more liberal than they have been in decades, according to a survey by the National Association of Socialists. Gallup analysis from more than 20 years of polling data.

In recent years, about 4 in 10 young women between the ages of 18 and 29 have described their political views as liberal, up from just 3 in 10 twenty years ago.

For many young women, their liberal identity isnā€™t just a new label. The share of young women who hold liberal views on the environment, abortion, race relations and gun control has also increased by double digits, Gallup found.

Young women ā€œare not just identifying as liberal because they like the term or because they feel more comfortable using it or because someone they respect is using the term,ā€ said Lydia Saad, director of U.S. social research at Gallup. ā€œThey have actually become much more liberal in their actual positions.ā€

Former Michigan governors and elected officials from both parties are joining forces in a broader fight against misinformation and attacks on voting procedures and vote counting in several swing states ahead of the fast-approaching presidential election.

The Democracy Defense Project also includes former officials from a number of states where then-President Donald Trump attempted to overturn his 2020 election defeat, including GeorgiaTheir goal is to build confidence in elections through radio and TV advertising, media outreach, and local engagement.

“We’re going to collectively, where appropriate, speak out when people question the integrity or the accuracy of our voting record. We believe in our system and we don’t appreciate people making up stories that are self-serving,” former Michigan Gov. James Blanchard told The Associated Press ahead of the Michigan chapter’s official launch on Thursday.

Blanchard, a Democrat who served as governor from 1983 to 1991, is joined on the Michigan team by former Republican Gov. John Engler, former Democratic Lt. Gov. John Cherry and former Republican U.S. Congressman Mike Bishop.

Florida Democrats made bold claims last week about their chances in a state that has become increasingly conservative in recent years. But so far, they haven’t matched their words with the money needed to win there.

ā€œFlorida is in the game,ā€ he proclaimed Debbie Mucarsel-Powella former Miami state representative, at the start of a bus tour defending women’s reproductive rights in Boynton Beach. Mucarsel-Powell is the Florida Democrats’ choice to challenge the incumbent Republican senator. Rick Scott for one of the few Senate seats the GOP is defending this election cycle.

Republicans outspent Democrats in Floridaā€™s U.S. Senate race by about four to one through September 11, at $12.7 million to $3.2 million, according to data from AdImpact, which tracks ad spending by political campaigns and their surrogates. Based on ad slots currently reserved through the general election, that margin is expected to widen.
