The latest Windows 11 update is causing stuttering for some gamers
>
The rollout of the major Windows 11 2022 update (22H2) hasn’t exactly been super smooth, and there’s now another issue to report: Microsoft says some users may experience “lower-than-expected performance in some games.”
That’s the last entry in the list of known issues (opens in new tab) managed by Microsoft (via PC gamer (opens in new tab)), and it is described as games that are slow or suffer from stuttering while playing. If you’ve noticed since installing the update, you’re not alone.
According to Microsoft, this is due to the fact that some games and applications “inadvertently enable GPU performance debugging features that are not intended to be used by consumers” – so it’s a built-in Windows 11 feature that turns on when it shouldn’t. .
Can you make it?
Microsoft has paused the rollout of the 22H2 update on computers it believes are vulnerable to the bug, but if you’ve already installed it, the official advice is that updating affected programs and games to newer versions “can”. help with the problem.
Other than that, Microsoft says it’s “working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release” — in other words, you’ll have to sit tight until a fix is included in a future Windows 11 patch.
You may still be able to roll back to the previous version of Windows 11 while Microsoft sorts the code: choose from Settings System, then Recovery, then go back to the version of the software without the 22H2 update applied.
Analysis: bumps in the road
When you update millions of computers, it is inevitable that some of them will run into problems, but the goal is always to make sure those problems are as small as possible and affect as few devices as possible.
It’s hard to estimate how widespread this problem is, but when you consider that: a Reddit thread on the issue (opens in new tab) has received hundreds of responses, we suspect that a significant number of games will be affected by this issue.
We have previously reported on a significant portion of users experiencing gaming performance issues after applying the 22H2 update to their machines, and it seems likely that this is the same set of issues, now officially recognized and acknowledged by Microsoft.
Since this major update has also caused issues with printers and Windows Hello, Microsoft hopes it can fix this gaming issue as soon as possible – otherwise, Windows 11 operating system usage will remain low.
