A man with a gun believed to be similar to the gun used in the UnitedHealthcare killing CEO Brian Thompson was taken into police custody Monday for questioning in Pennsylvania, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.
Thompson was killed Wednesday in what police said was a “brazen, targeted” attack as he walked to a hotel in New York City.
Here’s the latest:
New York Mayor Eric Adams is expected to explain the development during a previously scheduled afternoon news briefing in Manhattan.
While they are still searching for the suspect’s identity, the FBI has a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. That’s in addition to a $10,000 reward offered by the NYPD.
That included footage of the attack, but also footage of someone in a Starbucks beforehand.
Photos taken in the lobby of a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side showed the person grinning after removing his mask, police said.
NYPD dogs and divers returned to New York’s Central Park today as they led the dragnet Thompson’s killer stretched to a sixth day.
Investigators have scoured the park since Wednesday’s shooting, searching at least one of the ponds for three days, looking for evidence that may have been thrown into it.
Police say the shooter used a 9mm handgun similar to the weapons farmers use to put down animals without making a loud noise. Police said they had not yet found the weapon itself.
Ammunition found near Thompson’s body carried the words ‘delay’, ‘deny’ and ‘depose’, an expression used by critics of the insurance industry.
