The theme of Wednesday night’s convention was “Freedom.” Backed by Beyoncé’s song of the same name, which the musician has authorized Harris’ campaign to use, the word flashed across the video screen and in speech after speech at the United Center.
Democrats explicitly linked it to the fight for reproductive rights, which only really got underway after the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
But Democrats also used the liberty argument to criticize Republicans on other social issues, from gay rights to increasing bans on books in schools.
More than 1,000 pro-Palestinian protesters marched past a park on Wednesday where pro-Israel demonstrators had previously gathered.
The demonstration, which was largely peaceful, took place a day after violent clashes Between the police and demonstrators, 56 people were arrested.
While the protesters were under a new elevated train station At the United Center, which was completed just before the DNC, officers were seen lowering a person on the platform above to the ground. In response, hundreds of protesters pushed against the edge of the station, banging their hands and flagpoles on the glass as they called for police to free the person. The person exited the station through the emergency exit moments later, accompanied by officers but not handcuffed, prompting cheers from the crowd.
