The iPhone SE 4 could finally leave Touch ID behind – and that’s a good thing

Ever since Apple introduced Face ID and started phasing out Touch ID in its top iPhones, there have been claims and rumors that the company will make a U-turn and bring back its fingerprint scanner in future phones. Well, a new report has put a damper on that whole idea – and we can be happy about that.

According to a claim filed on Chinese social media site WeiboApple has no plans to bring Touch ID back to its upcoming iPhones. The report was spotted by MacRumorsand the outlet noted that the Weibo poster has a track record of Apple leaks.

The Weibo leaker further claimed that most of Apple’s Touch ID production capacity has been halted, indicating that the company has no plans to implement the technology in its devices anytime soon.

Right now, the only Apple phone that uses Touch ID is the iPhone SE. But even that may not last long, as rumors claim that the iPhone SE 4 – apparently slated for launch in 2024 – will adopt Face ID, bringing the facial recognition technology to every iPhone Apple sells.

Face ID is simply better

There have long been rumors that Apple is working on some sort of under-screen Touch ID for future iPhones, but this idea doesn’t really make sense given what Apple itself has already said.

The iPhone X was the first Apple phone to use Face ID when it launched in 2017. At the time, Apple promoted Face ID by saying it was much more secure than Touch ID. While Touch ID had a one in 50,000 chance of being fooled, said Applethose odds were much lower for Face ID: just one in a million.

So why would Apple go back and reinstate a technology that is said to be less secure than what’s already in your iPhone? Security is one of Apple’s top concerns; the idea that it will deliberately reduce the security of its devices is ridiculous.

Not to mention the other drawbacks of Touch ID, like how difficult it is to work when your fingers are wet, or how difficult it is to use when your hands are full. Face ID is not only more secure, but also more convenient. Apple won’t go back on that.

So no, don’t expect Touch ID to return, whether in the iPhone SE 4 or as some sort of futuristic under-screen version. We already have something much better in the form of Face ID.
