The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence faces FURY from fans after calling Jennifer Lawrence’s character Katniss Everdeen ‘asexual’ while comparing her to Rachel Zegler’s role in the upcoming prequel movie

The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence faced a bitter backlash from fans after he described Jennifer Lawrence’s character in the hit trilogy as “asexual.”

Lawrence, 52, made the odd comment about Hunger Games protagonist Katniss Everdeen while discussing the differences between her and the protagonist in the upcoming prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lucy Gray, who is played by controversial Snow White star Rachel Zegler.

Comparing the two fictional characters, Lawrence says Gray is the “anti-Katniss,” before continuing: “Katniss was an introvert and a survivor. She was pretty quiet and stoic, you could almost say she was asexual.

He went on to say, “Lucy Gray is the complete opposite. She carries her sexuality with her, (and) she really is a performer.”

Fans of the popular dystopian franchise were quick to take issue with Lawrence’s take on Katniss, criticizing him for drawing attention to her sexuality, especially considering she was only 16 years old at the start of the series – and ‘lived in a dystopia’. ‘.

“I don’t think Katniss was asexual. Katniss was a 16-year-old living in a dystopia where children were regularly sent to slaughter for sports. she spends about three whole books wrestling with that fact,” one person tweeted.

Another wrote: ‘Katniss was a traumatized teenager who was used as a pawn in a great game for the entertainment of ‘upper’ society AND in a revolution by the ‘good guys’.

‘She didn’t have much time or choice to express herself’

‘Asexual? Katniss entered a lottery where she was slaughtered and had a 1 in 12 chance of surviving,” a third said.

They added, “Not once, but twice, while we are a pawn in a political war. In three novels she was on the verge of death, but purring her little cat was not on her priority list.’

Others didn’t appreciate him using her more introverted traits as an explanation for why she might be asexual.

‘Stoic/introverted ≠ asexual. Katniss was literally a child repeatedly fighting for her life,” one fan of the franchise wrote.

They continued, “Not only did she have much more important things to do than sex, like survive, but she also didn’t want to involve anyone else in her life when it was so unsafe.”

“I’m tired of people calling asexual to any character who is a bit introverted and doesn’t talk/think about sex 24/7,” another tweeted.

They added, “Katniss was too busy trying to survive and save his family to think about sex, that doesn’t mean she was asexual, shut up.”

Some felt that the nature of the books did not allow for a true exploration of her sexuality and that it is therefore not appropriate for Lawrence to come to a conclusion on her own.

“Whether or not Katniss is a top talent has nothing to do with how she behaves as a teenager in the middle of a war…?” explained one fan.

“Yes, she could be top notch, but we wouldn’t know because it’s not like she has time for self-discovery?” + You can be a topper and looking so sexy has nothing to do with it,” they added.

Another advocate wrote, “I’m all for some representation, but let’s not misrepresent it. Asexuality is not abstinence, and Katniss was a survivor in a dystopian world.

“She wasn’t worried about sex, she was afraid she wouldn’t get killed. And if she was asexual, you should have put it in the movie.’

Others disagreed that Katniss had been sexualized since she was a minor, and that this was not the main point in the books.

‘???? The character of Katniss was 16 and lived through a literal apocalypse as he battled the powers that be. and she wasn’t sexy enough for you?’ one user asked.

their sexuality isn’t even the point of their stories. Why are these directors obsessed with them when the book material is so rich and they can cover so many things?’ Another asked.

“All they care about is that Katniss wasn’t horny 100% of the time…the people around her were dying.”

Others blamed the director and his gender for the comparison he made.

Only a male director would describe it that way. Why are you sexualizing their behavior when the point is they’re kids,” one fan of the books wrote.

The main difference is that Lucy was an artist. Katniss was known for not being able to do just that.”

Another wrote, “I’m pretty sure Katniss was more concerned about surviving the game than about sexual behavior… men need to shut up.”

“I don’t recall Lucy wearing sexuality on her sleeve in the books,” one user wrote. And Katniss doesn’t exude asexual feelings. She was a very stressed teenager…”

“What does their sexuality have to do with their stories?” asked another.

“If Katniss didn’t think about that, it’s because she had bigger problems, like trying not to get killed and there’s not even anything sexual in tbosas.”

“A bit of an odd take on teenage girls in active war,” said a third.

They then went on to pinpoint a specific moment in the novel, saying, “Katniss isn’t asexual and her thoughts on the beach with Peeta prove it, however, she’s extremely traumatized and in survival mode.”

“And none of Lucy’s performances or stunts ever had sexual overtones for me,” she added.
