The Google Pixel Fold 2 could get a radical new design
The rumored Google Pixel Fold 2 could feature a significantly different design from its predecessor by ditching the camera visor and potentially taking the phone in a new direction.
This is evident from claimed renders of the next generation Pixel Fold, shared by a reliable leaker @OnLeaks in association with SmartPrixthat shows off a new design that keeps up with supposed photos of a prototype Pixel Fold 2 which surfaced earlier this month. Please note that it is unclear whether these renders are official renders leaked from Google or were created from early CAD information.
If these renderings are accurate, Google may replace the existing horizontal camera layout with a raised, curved, and slightly rectangular camera island. This new design consists of two elliptical-shaped bars stacked vertically, which appear to house three cameras. The third circle is most likely a focus sensor, but could also be a temperature sensor like the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

Google introduced the striking camera visor design with the Google Pixel6 in 2021. And since then, all subsequent Pixel phones have used that camera design.
However, according to On Leaks And SmartPrixMore design changes are coming. The inner camera has been given a cut-out design instead of being placed in the bezel like that of the camera Google Pixel fold. But the placement doesn’t seem to have shifted too much and is still in the top right corner of the screen.
Apart from camera updates, the render points to a thinner and sleeker phone with smaller bezels. This would be a welcome update to the original Pixel Fold, which was known for its thick bezels. The Fold 2 is also expected to be larger than its predecessor, as the phone measures approximately 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.27mm when unfolded, according to Smarprix. It could also have a squarer shape when expanded and a larger cover screen, which is expected to grow from 5.8 to 6.4 inches.
Well-known design
As mentioned, the renders resemble an earlier leak from the prototype Pixel Fold 2. Both the earlier leak and the new Pixel Fold 2 renders show the charcoal version, a departure from Google’s typical vibrant options. However, the final version is expected to offer a range of brighter colors.
The release date for the Google Pixel Fold 2 has yet to be confirmed, but the phone could be announced at Google I/O 2024, which is expected to take place in early May, just like previous years. However, the same source previously said that the Pixel Fold 2 could launching at the same time as the Google Pixel 9which is not expected until October 2024.
While some may be sad to see the Pixel Fold 2 possibly ditch the unique Pixel visor, this new design could provide a seamless transition when zooming and switching between sensors due to their proximity. It’s currently unknown if this new design is just unique to the Pixel Fold series or if it represents a new look for all Google Pixel phones. However, with Google’s insistence on design uniformity, the Pixel Fold 2 prototype could represent a new look for future Pixel phones.
