The Gilded Age gets renewed for Season 3 on HBO… just days after the Season 2 finale

HBO is gearing up to return to 1880s New York City, with the network renewing The Gilded Age for season 3.

The critically acclaimed series just aired its season 2 finale on December 17, with Thursday's renewal coming just four days later.

The series follows Marian (Louisa Jacobson), a young woman who moves in with her wealthy aunts in the Russell family.

She becomes entangled in her 'old money' family's war with the 'new money' Van Rhijn family in the hit series, created by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey).

The first season – which debuted in January 2022 – included nine episodes and the second – which arrived in October 2023 – contained eight episodes.

HBO has yet to confirm how many episodes there will be in season 3, nor have they confirmed a production schedule or release date.

“We are so proud of what Julian Fellowes and The Gilded Age Family have accomplished,” Francesca Orsi, executive vp HBO Programming and head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement.

“From the costumes to the production design and performances, the show has captivated many week after week,” Orsi added.

“Together with our partners at Universal Television, we are thrilled to continue this great story for a third season,” she concluded.

The series is a co-production between HBO and Universal Television, as Oscar-winning writer Fellowes created the series more than a decade ago.

Fellowes initially signed a deal to develop The Gilded Age in late November 2012, in the middle of the Downton Abbey series, which ran from 2010 to 2015.

Over five years later, in late January 2018, NBC issued a ten-episode order for the series, which they planned to debut in 2019… although that would never happen.

HBO announced in May 2019 that the series is moving forward on the pay cable network and will be a joint production with Universal Television.
