The Gentlemen season 2: everything we know about the return of the hit Netflix show
The gentlemen, Netflix’s spin-off series from Guy Ritchie’s film of the same name, is a big hit. The crime caper rocketed to number one on the streamer’s TV charts and stayed in the top 10 for four weeks with 7.8 million views at the time of writing.
If you enjoy it – and if you don’t, we recommend streaming these three great crime capers instead – you’ll no doubt be asking the same question we were: will there be a The gentlemen season two? The good news is that it doesn’t seem like you have to send the guys over to talk to each other to make it happen.
If you haven’t seen the show yet, The gentlemen follows Eddie Horninan, the estranged son of an English aristocrat who becomes embroiled in London’s criminal underworld. It gets mixed reviews – 68% from Rotten Tomatoes critics compared to 83% from viewers – but the people who like it love it. The Chicago Sun Times said it was “slick and sly and darkly funny”, the Daily telegram said it’s “a nice caper”, while the Decision maker says it’s a “romp.”
The Gentlemen season 2: Release date rumors
Of course, there are no guarantees when it comes to TV show renewals, but The gentlemen seems like a likely contender for a second season. Speak with DeadlineMarc Helwig, Miramax’s head of global television, said that “there are a number of writers we’ve talked to, certainly a lot of discussion with Guy about what he would like to do in a second season (and) what he should focus on”.
But the first season “must perform, and then we will know more.” One possibility is a Guy Ritchie expanded universe, “a Guy Ritchie world” that could lead to a new movie set in the same universe. It certainly helps for Miramax that the show is relatively cheap to make.
Whether it’s another show or movie, Netflix chiefs have reportedly said they’re interested in a sequel, an unnamed TV insider told The sun. But the same source has raised doubts due to “problems getting the same actors back”, as the diaries of Guy Ritchie and the main actors are quickly booked up. This could mean there’s still a way to go before we hear about a possible release date for season two.
The Gentlemen Season 2: Cast Rumors
If there is one actor who seems certain of a second season The gentlemen it’s Theo James. Speak with Tudum from Netflix in early March, he said of the show’s ending, “That’s the beginning of his (character’s (i.e. Eddie Horniman)) journey into the heart of darkness.”
“Eddie and Susie just signed the deal with the devil and they’re about to embark on a devilish journey,” he adds, which could be an indication that Kaya will see Scodelario return as well. Of course, nothing has been confirmed yet, but based on what’s been said so far, this is our first indication of what to expect.
The Gentlemen season 2: Future seasons
It seems very likely that we will see multiple seasons. The show is currently doing good numbers for Netflix and was initially intended to be a multi-series show rather than another movie, so it seems likely.
Speak with Digital spyGiancarlo Esposito – who plays Stanley Johnson on the show – says that while there has been no talk of a second season yet, “we have the opportunity to move forward, and I think the show does.”
Although Netflix has not yet announced a second season, it is clearly being considered.
