The gender-neutral family emoji is coming to YOUR phone later this year

  • Emojipedia has revealed that four gender-neutral family emojis could be launched
  • These are in the form of silhouettes, similar to the existing ‘Bust in Silhouette’

Since 2019, Apple has provided iPhone users with non-binary versions of almost every human emoji, ranging from merpeople to chefs.

Now, a new report claims that the selection of gender-neutral emoji could grow even further.

Emojipedia has revealed that four gender-neutral family emojis could be launched by the end of this year.

These are in the form of silhouettes, similar to the existing ‘Bust in Silhouette’ and ‘Busts in Silhouette’.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new emoji, including what they look like and when to expect them on your device.

Several family emojis are already available, including a family with a man, woman, girl and boy, family with two men and a girl, and a family with two women and a boy.

But Emojipedia has revealed that new gender-neutral options may be on the way.

It unveiled the new emoji and created sample designs in one blogging to celebrate World Emoji Day earlier this month.

“Includes the Emoji 15.1 draft list alongside the lime, a vertical head shake, and a phoenix bird, as well as four new gender-neutral family emojis,” it explains.

The gender-neutral family emoji has gray silhouettes and comes in four designs: a family with two adults and a child, a family with an adult and two children, a family with an adult and a child, and a family with two adults and two children.

According to Emojipedia, two new faces appear to be added, in the form of a horizontal head shake and a vertical head shake.

A phoenix, a lime, a brown mushroom and a broken chain may also come to your smartphone soon.

Aside from these characters, new directional versions of six different types of person emoji could be coming this year.

These are the person walking, the person running, the person kneeling, the person with the white cane, the person in a manual wheelchair, and the person in a motorized wheelchair.

Unfortunately, it remains unclear whether these emoji will be in the final version of Emoji 15.1.

“However, based on recent years, the final version will likely reflect this draft list,” Emojipedia added.

“This means no new emojis will be added at this stage, although there is a small chance that a draft emoji candidate will be changed or removed before September.”

In terms of timeline, Emojipedia predicts that some platforms will launch these new emoji within a few months.

“Expect some companies to come with early emoji support by the end of 2023 and most updates will be in the first half of 2024,” it added.
