The four ‘safe’ blue states transformed into purple battlegrounds as ailing Biden clings to power and Trump closes in

Experts believe four previously “safe” blue states — Minnesota, New Mexico, Virginia and New Hampshire — could turn into battlegrounds during Biden’s struggling campaign.

The president has suffered a number of setbacks in recent weeks since his disappointing defeat to Donald Trump during the presidential debate.

Now Democrats are warning that historically blue states could change positions in November.

Biden easily won all four states in 2020, but recent models suggest support may be declining.

A poll shows the mood in Virginia is about even, New York Times reports. The state has not voted Republican since 2004.

Another shows Trump with a lead in New Hampshire, an area that has been a Democratic stronghold since 2000.

Meanwhile, the independent Cook Political Report has downgraded its numbers for Minnesota and New Hampshire from “likely” wins for Biden to “barely” leaning his way.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan reportedly told sources she fears for her seat.

Her state has a large Hispanic population, a demographic that Biden has struggled to convince.

Democratic Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota said there was “much work to be done” to secure another victory, as his state has historically favored third-party candidates.

Even in Democratic strongholds like New York and Oregon, there are fears that Biden’s majority is shrinking, sources told the NYT.

Polls showed Biden ahead of Trump by only single-digit percentage points.

Trump’s team hopes to capitalize on the unrest. A memo from June said the Republican Party plans to open 11 campaign offices in Virginia and Minnesota.

“President Trump is appealing to voters across the political spectrum, including so-called blue states like Virginia, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico and New Jersey, with his agenda to cut costs, secure the border and restore peace through force,” Anna Kelly, a spokeswoman for the RNC, told the NYT.

The campaign received a financial boost from Elon Musk, who recently endorsed Trump with a donation of an undisclosed amount.

Trump has also previously boasted about challenging in true blue states like New Jersey. But this has been dismissed as a “firestorm” by Biden’s team.

“This election will be decided by a subset of voters in a limited number of battleground states, but only the Biden-Harris campaign is investing to reach and persuade those voters, with more than 200 offices and 1,200 staffers,” Biden campaign director Dan Kanninen said in a statement.

“We have multiple paths to victory and we will not take any voter for granted in our campaign.”

This comes amid predictions that Biden could also lose three key swing states due to the negative reactions to his repeated gaffes.

According to one expert, the president has “as much chance of surviving on Mars” as he does of winning the three key swing states: Georgia, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

A bipartisan poll in the swing state of Wisconsin showed Trump leading Biden by five percentage points after the June 27 debate.

Biden trailed by a similar margin when third-party candidates were also considered.

However, he is determined to run despite calls from two dozen Democrats to withdraw.

Several polls show that Biden’s chances have not been too badly damaged by his recent gaffes, including this week’s reference to Ukrainian President Zelensky as Putin.

Research from NPR and Marist College shows that Biden and Trump are nearly evenly matched.
