A survey of 2,000 adults who eat fish finger sandwiches found that 42 percent said it was their favorite sandwich.

Nearly half (43%) prefer their sandwich to be cut sideways so that there are whole fish sticks on both sides of the bread.

But 30 percent like to cut their sarnie lengthwise, so all fish sticks are in half, and nine percent even cut into triangles.

More than one in five (21 percent) of respondents liked the food with lettuce (21 percent), while 15 percent liked the addition of cheese and 12 percent tomato.

Commissioned by Birds Eye, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Iceland Foods, which sells MSC-certified products such as Birds Eye fish fingers, the research found that 76 percent would choose a fish fingers sandwich made from sustainably sourced cod. But 62 percent claim to have only a vague idea of ​​what sustainable fishing is.

When asked about the meaning of the blue MSC label, 42 percent said ‘not sure’.

However, 44 percent rightly say this is the symbol of sustainability for wild-caught fish and seafood. More than half (55 percent) say they are concerned about the impact their food choices have on the planet, but find this confusing. While 39 percent of those who took part in the OnePoll.com survey simply cannot afford to make the necessary changes.

An MSC spokesperson said: ‘The makers of the fish stick, Birds Eye, co-founded the MSC to help protect the seafood supply.
