The five ‘most used’ emojis by Gen Z that nobody else uses correctly

  • Tinder revealed the top five emojis used in dating profiles for 2023
  • The dating app also shared popular terms and phrases coined by singles

The top five most popular emojis used on Tinder dating profiles this year have been revealed.

The comprehensive list was released as part of Tinder's annual 'Year in Swipe' report, with the number one trending icon being the 'on' emoji.

This year, singles used specific emojis to show how they prioritize their health and wellbeing – from the band-aid to prayer bead symbol.

Those who don't know will be left puzzled as they try to understand what the emojis mean in the dating world.

Tinder has revealed the top five emojis for 2023 among singles – and those unaware will continue to be amazed at what the symbols mean in the dating world.

The 'on' emoji was most commonly used among singles who used it to let others know they are open to new things and adventures

The “on” emoji was prevalent among singles worldwide who used the icon to let potential matches know they wanted to try “cool new things” or were even ready to explore a new relationship.

Singles added the emoji to their Tinder description to indicate openness and optimism.

Last year, the parking symbol was the most popular emoji used to 'encourage positivity'.

In second place was the coconut drink 'yerba mate' emoji, which was used to show that singles tend to opt for healthy drinks to replace drink alternatives.

Then the prayer bead emoji came in third place and was used to symbolize zen, mental well-being and mindfulness. By comparison, last year the third most used emoji was the red flag.

The fourth most trending emoji for 2023 was the Band Aid emoji to let other singles know you're “on a journey to healing and getting back out there.”

And finally, the bouquet of flowers was used as the “ultimate” romantic (or delusional) gesture to others.

Tinder has clocked a shift towards a more open-minded approach to dating in 2023.

A range of new dating terms and expressions also emerged during the year – the top two being 'doing it for the plot' and NATO (not attached to the outcomes).

Singles have embraced the 'energy of their protagonist' and are now fully invested in 'the plot' rather than 'the end result'.

Dating 'for the plot' is buzzing on Tinder worldwide, with the term on the rise among bios such as: 'Everything I do is for the plot, let's make some memories.'

NATO was seen as taking a 'diplomatic' approach to dating, with one in three Australians (30 percent) stating on their profile that they were 'open to exploring' options, while 37 percent were 'still figuring it out '.

Singles wanted to take risks this year and keep optimism about possible matches alive.

But while dating can be chaotic, singles weren't afraid to raise red flags in themselves or each other.

There was also a huge spike in the term 'delulu' – meaning delusional – as the trending term started growing globally and locally in Tinder bios from February 23, reaching its peak on September 23.

For example, singles wrote: 'If you are delulu, I am your solulu', 'Tall, dark and delulu' and 'Change my delulu to trululu'.
