The fish thinkers who inspired Eric Cantona | Short letters

Very disappointed to see that the article about Eric Cantona did not mention the wonderful film Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (‘It just came out’: Eric Cantona reveals inspiration for the 1995 seagull comment, March 27). Who could forget the Cantona-esque father figure Tim Lockwood, voiced by James Caan, whose dialogue and philosophy are based entirely on fishing metaphors, and his wise words: “Not every sardine was meant for swimming, son.”

In the 1930s my father was part of a group of musicians who played hymn music in the wards of the local hospital (Letters, March 25). On Palm Sunday they played “Ride on, ride on in majesty, in humble splendor, ride on to die,” as a patient was wheeled out on a cart for emergency surgery. My father could never sing that hymn again without his shoulders shaking with laughter.

I was impressed that, of all that is going on in the world, the most read article on your website on March 25 was: “I’m 60 – and I want to live to be 100. Will my years of drinking and inactivity be a problem? ?” Speaks volumes about Guardian readers.

But who’s in charge of the deck chairs (the departure of two more Tory ministers forces Sunak into a mini reshuffle, March 26)?
