The first trailer for Alien Romulus is here to envelop you in a chilling embrace of a gruesome face hug

Alien: Romulus‘ official trailer has emerged from its facehugger cocoon and appeared online – and I think it looks terrifyingly awesome.

Arrived almost three months later Alien: Romulus‘ menacing first teaser, the upcoming horror sci-fi film looks like a claustrophobic and terrifying return to form of the Ridley Scott-created franchise. Anyway, don’t just take my word for it, look at the new Alien the film’s trailer below to see for yourself.

See what I mean? With its impressive, minimalist sound design, practical sets and effects, undeniably ominous atmosphere and the way it honors what has come before, it’s no wonder that observers are already suggesting that Alien: Romulus will be the franchise’s best entry since 1986 Aliens. No pressure, eh?

What is one of the most anticipated new movies of 2024 about? 20th Century Studios and parent company Disney are still playing their cards close to their chest when it comes to the plot, but here’s a very brief summary of the story to tide you over until a more detailed story arrives: “As we explore the deep ends of a clearing an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

You don’t have to tell me what fear-inducing organisms they’ll encounter, but I’m glad we don’t actually see too much of the Alien franchise’s legendary xenomorphs in the trailer. Less is more in my opinion, so I hope a film of this style and aesthetic becomes one that feels like an improved version of the 1979 one. Alien, draws heavily on the first entry of the series.

There are plenty of new faces up for the xenomorph and facehugger-based chopping block in the latest installment of the film series. Cailee Spaeny leads the film’s talented cast, which viewers may recognize from last year’s Priscilla (available now from Max in the US) and recent Alex Garland-directed war drama Civil war. Archie Renaux, who had a major supporting role in the canceled Netflix fantasy show Shadow and boneis also ready for a leading role in Romulus. The aforementioned duo is joined by Isabela Merced (The last of us season 2, Mrs. Web), Spike Fearn (Nazon), David Jonsson (Rye Lane), and Aileen Wu in her first major role.

The talent assembled for Alien: Romulus is also behind the camera. Fede Alvarez, who was behind popular, exciting horror and/or thriller films, including Don’t breathe, Evil DeathAnd The girl in the spider web, had directed and co-written the franchise’s seventh big-screen installment. The filmmaker’s frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues co-wrote the script, while Ridley Scott is, unsurprisingly, on board as one of the film’s many executive producers.

Alien: Romulus debuts exclusively in theaters on August 16. In the meantime, you can check out the other six Alien movies now on Disney Plus, then see where each Scott-directed episode places on our list of the best Ridley Scott movies.
