Wayne Bennett has set his sights on Latrell Mitchell should his Dolphins’ pursuit of Cameron Munster end in misery, with a $4million move on the horizon.
Munster has a huge decision to make after the Storm put forward an ‘impressive’ offer to keep hold of the gun five-eighth, in a bid to tie him down to an extended deal before he hits the market on November 1.
His manager, Braith Anasta, said Munster and the club had a ‘really positive’ meeting on Tuesday, in what appears to be a blow to the newcomers, who have offered him $1.3m a season.
The Dolphins are reportedly lining up a $4million move for Souths star Latrell Mitchell
Wayne Bennett is desperate to land a marquee name and could turn to the fullback
However, News Corp reports that the Dolphins could offer the same money to Souths star Mitchell, but the 25-year-old has insisted: ‘I can’t be second choice’.
Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett is understood to have been in regular contact with Mitchell, having worked with the fullback between 2020 and 2021, and the supercoach says he will be eager to negotiate with the NSW star come November 1.
‘I haven’t had talks with Latrell, but if he is on the open market in November, then yes I’m interested,’ Bennett said.
‘He has been negotiating with South Sydney and they might do a deal before he becomes a free agent.
‘Right now, he isn’t on the market.
However, Mitchell does not want to be ‘second choice’ behind No 1 target Cameron Munster
‘If Latrell does go to the open market, there will be 16 other clubs chasing him and we will be one of them.’
A three-year deal priced at $1.3m a season would make Mitchell the highest-paid player alongside Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary. Mitchell currently earns $850,000 a year at Souths.
Bennett is under pressure to land a marquee signing for 2023, although he has sights set on Munster and Mitchell for 2024 if they enter their debut season without a star man.
Mitchell told News Corp: ‘I am second choice Wayne, am I? I can’t be second choice.
‘I leave that (his contract) up to my managers and Blake Solly (Souths CEO) to talk about.’
