The director of Final Fantasy 8 says he would change the game’s combat system if there were a remake

Final fantasy 8 director Yoshinori Kitase has said that if Square Enix were to remake the game, he would change the combat system.

Speaking in one interview Speaking to IGN, the series producer explained that he would be “reworking” the combat system known as Junction, after noticing how some players struggled to understand the mechanics when it was originally released in 1999.

“I think you might remember we had the Junction system Final fantasy 8” said Kitase. “And the thing about that system was that the enemies leveled up according to the player’s level. And then obviously you had to use the Junction system and how you adapt that to overcome the challenge there. And I think it was a very difficult situation. system that some people can get started with. Depending on the player’s skills, sometimes they didn’t know what the best way to do it was.”

Kitase continued, saying that he would like to come back to specifically address this aspect if a remake were made, and would like to ensure that the “difficulty and accessibility” for some players was “a lot better balanced overall” .

“So I think that’s the thing I would look at the most if I were looking at a remake of it,” he said.

Square Enix is ​​currently focusing on its Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, the second part of which Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, is about to start on February 29 for PlayStation 5. There’s no official word on a remake of it Final fantasy 8but even if it were confirmed, Kitase says that recreating that level of content from an RPG today is “not something you can take lightly.”

He added: “It’s such a huge investment of time and effort that we really have to think very carefully about taking on any kind of project.”
