The death of the 24-year-old British law student who fell from a hotel balcony in Ibiza’s San Antonio resort in 2022 is now a MURDER INVESTIGATION – as police arrest a 27-year-old London man

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a law firm employee who jumped 30 feet to her death from a hotel balcony in Ibiza.

Robyn Eve Maines, 24, was described by her closest family as “beautiful inside and out and with everything to live for” following her tragic death in the seaside resort of San Antonio in September 2022.

The law student from Wallasey, Wirral was on holiday with her partner. It is understood he was with her when she fell and alerted hotel reception staff.

Authorities on the Spanish island said at the time that they had “ruled out” the involvement of others in the tragic death of a British holidaymaker on the island, saying it was not being treated as a crime.

But in a dramatic twist, just before the second anniversary of her death, Merseyside Police have announced that a 27-year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

After being questioned, he was released on bail pending further investigation.

Detectives today appealed for witnesses to come forward and said Ms Maines’ death was being treated as “unexplained”.

Her family responded with heartbreak: “We just want justice for Robyn.”

Mrs Maines and her partner stayed at the four-star Rosamar Hotel, adults-only, a short walk from Cala de Bou beach in the west of the island and a short drive from San Antonio.

Her body was found on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at 8:30 am after she fell from a second-floor balcony.

Her mother Claire said at the time: ‘Our beautiful 24-year-old daughter has sadly passed away after falling 30ft from her balcony. There are no words to describe this. We are truly devastated.’

Her brother Cam added: ‘She will always be loved and remembered for the wonderful person she is.

“Our hearts bleed for the loss of someone so special. I love you big sister and always will.”

Diane Morrisey, Mrs. Maines’ aunt, started an online fundraiser to help repatriate her body and cover funeral expenses, describing her as “a beautiful person, inside and out, with everything to live for.”

She said that her niece had studied law at university and then started working at a law firm.

“To say the family is devastated by their loss is an understatement,” she wrote.

“All we know now is that Robyn fell 30 feet from her balcony. The police investigation is ongoing.”

Her employer, CEL Solicitors, paid tribute, describing Ms Maines as ‘a much loved and incredibly valued member of our team’.

A Guardia Civil source said at the time: ‘The autopsy has taken place and has ruled out the involvement of any other person in the death of this woman.

“It’s not the result of a crime.”

Merseyside Police announced today that they have now launched an investigation into her death after examining material sent to them by Spanish authorities.

Detective Inspector Phil Ryan said: “On the second anniversary of the offences, I am appealing for witnesses who stayed at the hotel in September 2022 and who live in the UK to come forward.

‘Maybe you go back to the same hotel on the same date every year.

‘Were you there in 2022 and did you see or hear anything, or do you have other information that can help us with our investigation?

‘At this time Robyn’s death is being treated as unexplained and we are conducting a number of enquiries, but it is vital that people come forward and tell us what they know.

‘Robyn’s family is understandably devastated by her death and are still searching for answers as to what happened.’

Ms Maines’ family released the following statement: ‘Our beautiful daughter Robyn Eve Maines was tragically taken from us on September 25, 2022 at the Hotel Rosamar in Ibiza.

The latest tragedy on the island occurred last month when law student Emma Ramsay, 19, was on holiday with friends in San Antonio and fell from her sixth-floor balcony at the Hotel Vibra District.

Emergency services arrived quickly on the scene, but the Strathclyde University student was pronounced dead at the scene.

In June 2023, 22-year-old amateur footballer John McKenna from Carlisle in Cumbria died at the same resort after falling from a three-star hotel.
