Every year millions of Britons pack their bags to spend a relaxing holiday on sandy beaches or skiing down mountains – but for some, the holidays have a tragic end.
Dozens of Britons never made it home to their families, with more than 160 people drowning, dying or dying in road accidents last year alone.
For the past three years, Spain has been consistently the deadliest country for Britons, with gap-year hotspot Thailand a close second, according to figures from the British Foreign Office.
Last year, 24 Britons died in a fatal accident, while 16 drowned and another 11 died in a road accident in Spain – far more than in other countries explored by Britons.
Here, MailOnline takes a look at the countries where Britons have suffered fatal accidents.
FATAL ACCIDENTS

Britons are more likely to have a fatal accident in Spain than any other country in the world, figures show.
Last year, the number of British victims who died as a result of an accident in Spain more than doubled, with 24 deaths in 2022 compared to 10 in 2021.
Meanwhile, France had the second-highest number of deaths last year, with 16 people losing their lives in fatal accidents, according to foreign ministry figures.
In Turkey, an increasingly popular holiday destination for Britons who want to see some sun, 13 people were killed in accidents. And in the United States and Australia, 12 Britons suffered the same tragic end.
In Thailand, known for its beautiful beaches and a popular place for gap year students, and Italy, eight people died in accidents last year. And in Egypt, six people suffered the same fate.
The figures also show that in 47 countries, including Greece, Germany, Canada and Norway, between one and five people have died as a result of a fatal accident.

Greece had the second highest drowning rate: seven Britons died last year, while six others drowned in France.
Figures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also show that in 32 countries, including Cyprus, Thailand, Turkey and Portugal, between five Britons drowned last year.

Some 11 Britons were killed in a road accident while visiting Spain last year, double the number of deaths in 2020.
Thailand – a country popular with British tourists – was the second deadliest location, with ten Britons killed in accidents there last year.
Meanwhile, ten Britons were also killed in road accidents in the United States.
Foreign Office figures also showed that in 18 countries, including Italy, Cyprus, Turkey and the Philippines, between one and five Britons died in road accidents.
