The craziest Champions League game of all time? Barcelona seal stunning 5-4 comeback win over Benfica in last minute after bizarre goals, a red card, chaos and controversy

Raphinha scored deep into injury time as Barcelona completed a stunning 5-4 comeback win over Benfica in one of the most chaotic Champions League games of all time.

The Brazilian was played through in the sixth minute of extra time as Benfica players protested for a last-gasp penalty at the other end.

Raphinha fired past Anatoliy Trubin to stun the hosts and spark wild Barcelona celebrations as Hansi Flick’s side secured their place in the last 16.

Benfica saw their furious appeals for a penalty rejected by VAR, with the full-time whistle immediately blown at the restart to end the dramatic match.

The home team took the lead within two minutes when Vangelis Pavlidis tapped in from close range.

Robert Lewandowski equalized from the spot when VAR awarded Barcelona a penalty for a foul by Tomas Araujo on Alejandro Balde in the 11th minute.

Pavlidis restored Benfica’s lead, taking advantage of a poor run-out from goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who left the forward with an open goal.

The 26-year-old grabbed his third with a penalty after Szczesny fouled Kerem Akturkoglu after half an hour.

A blunder from Benfica keeper Anatoliy Trubin also proved costly as he fired the ball straight at Raphinha’s head and into the net for a bizarre goal as the visitors pulled one back in the 64th minute to make it 3-2.

However, Barcelona’s defensive misfortunes continued and Benfica extended their lead again four minutes later thanks to a Ronald Araujo own goal.

Lewandowski scored his second with another clinical penalty in the 78th.

Substitute Eric Garcia equalized three minutes from time with a towering header from Pedri’s fine cross, before Raphinha found the winner six minutes into stoppage time after a quick counter-attack that stunned the home crowd.
