A sessions court on Thursday extended the remand of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister V Senthil Balaji till January 11.

The DMK leader, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case on June 14, 2023, is currently lodged in Puzhal jail here.

Judge S. Alli, before whom Balaji was produced by the prosecutor through video conferencing from jail, extended his judicial custody.

Balaji was arrested by the ED in connection with a money laundering case related to a cash-for-jobs scam when he was transport minister during an earlier AIADMK regime.

Shortly after his arrest, he underwent bypass surgery at a private hospital. Later, the ED took him into custody for interrogation and thereafter he was remanded in judicial custody. His pre-trial detention was periodically extended by the court.
