The Block’s Shaynna Blaze details the most ‘bizarre moment’ of her TV career and discusses the ‘dark’ side of dating

Shaynna Blaze has revealed what the most ‘bizarre’ moment of her TV career was and provided insight into the difficulties of dating for the general public.

The 61-year-old interior designer may be best known as a judge on The Block since 2012, but she has now detailed exactly how she got the job.

She admitted that it felt “weird” when she was first signed up to be a judge, as she had previously considered taking part in the show as one of the contestants.

Shaynna said she was stunned when her manager called her to ask if she would consider becoming a judge on The Block while she was filming Selling Houses in Alice Springs.

“That was weird to begin with, because The Block was something we all knew and loved,” she said Stellar Magazine.

‘And I think: maybe I can participate in The Block as a participant, that was in the back of my mind, I haven’t actually said that much before.’

“And my manager called me and said, ‘Look, don’t get excited. But how would you feel if you were a judge on The Block?” I stand in the middle of the red dirt in Alice Springs and say, ‘Uh, yeah!'” she added.

Shaynna said landing the job was one of the most “bizarre” moments of her TV career, describing how she stood in a room while they sold the job to her, rather than being interviewed.

She talked about the meeting: “They went on to tell me how great it would be to have a female judge on The Block.

“And I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Oh, they’re selling it to me, I’m not selling it to them,’ which is possibly one of the most bizarre moments in my TV career.”

Despite being shocked when she was offered the lucrative job, Shaynna has now become a recognizable face on the reality TV competition in her eight years as a judge.

Elsewhere in the interview, Shaynna also discussed the difficulties of dating in the public eye and talked about how she really tries to keep her romantic life private.

Giving a rare insight into her personal life, she described dating a famous person as ‘tricky’ but insisted she would never go down the path of online dating.

Shaynna described using dating apps as a “dark, cloak-and-dagger experience” and said she prefers meeting people in person.

Shaynna was previously married to personal trainer Steve Vaughan, but they split in August 2018 after 18 years of marriage.

Known for her high-flying real estate work, Shaynna also recently surprised fans when she detailed her huge career move.

Shaynna shocked fans in April when she revealed she would be turning her talents to music and releasing her first-ever music single, called Warrior.

However, she revealed that she does not see music as a reinvention, but as a long-awaited return after quitting her work as a singer when she became a mother to her children Carly and Jess.

‘There are many reasons why music was on the back burner for me. Initially it was my family. “I just wasn’t making enough money to support them,” she said in May.

“It was about getting other sources of income… you just don’t make a lot of money.

Shaynna also gave insight into her dating life, saying she refuses to use dating apps. She was previously married to personal trainer Steve Vaughan, but they split in August 2018

‘Besides, my children got older and I sang when they were young. I would put them to bed, go out and sing, and then come back, and my parents would take care of them. But it got to the point where my daughter was 14 or 15, she was going to parties. And I thought, ‘I think I should be there.’

The Block judge said it “hurt” her not to perform, to the point where she couldn’t listen to music for a very long time.

‘I missed it. There was something that really hurt listening to music, so I stopped listening to music for a while,” she confessed.

‘I stopped playing the songs I loved. I just suppressed it because I missed it so much.”

Shaynna publicly showed off her secret vocal talents for the first time last December as she sang I’ll Be Home for Christmas.
