The Block’s Scott Cam opens up about his battle against skin cancer after decades of working outside as a builder

Scott Cam has opened up about his battle with skin cancer when he said sun safety is a serious concern as a builder.

The Block host, 61, revealed that he has “spots” all over his hands and arms because his hands were constantly exposed to the sun while working outside on construction sites.

Scott, who worked as a builder for 20 years before starting his media career on lifestyle show Backyard Blitz in 2000, said Nine he now has permanent skin damage.

“I have spots all over my hands and forearms because I used to wear sleeves rolled up, so my hands were always visible,” he began.

“We really need to get sunscreen on our hands and arms and things like that. Nowadays everyone wears the right clothes, but their hands and arms are still visible.’

The former builder turned TV presenter has teamed up with wellbeing organization SafetyCulture to prevent skin cancer among Australian traditions.

He will offer free sunscreen to artisans working outdoors as part of a new national campaign to promote sun safety.

Scott said he hopes this new initiative will help make sun safety a daily part of a tradie’s pre-work routine.

“People apply lotion when they are at the beach, that is the custom, but they don’t apply lotion when they are at work, that is not the custom,” he said.

“You worry about scaffolding rails, harnesses, safety, work boots, eye and hearing protection, but the most important thing you are exposed to every day, all day, is the sun.”
