The Block auctions: Adrian Portelli is grilled in tense live radio interview

Radio host Kyle Sandilands snapped at his “millennial” producers for questioning the legitimacy of one of the potential buyers of last night’s The Block finale.

Melbourne businessman Adrian Portelli went up against Block royalty Danny Wallis in a bidding war for the winning home of Omar and Oz.

Portelli’s aggressive bidding caused a determined Wallis to spend a dazzling $5,666,666.66 on the couple’s four-bedroom, 10-acre estate — the biggest win in The Block’s 18-year history.

However, his role on auction day has come under scrutiny since the final aired, with some viewers falsely accusing the multimillionaire Lamborghini driver of being a fake bidder who was in cahoots with Omar and Oz.

Portelli was interviewed about the controversy on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Monday, with Sandilands strongly defending him throughout the segment.

However, his co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, producer Jaimee ‘Mayo’ Hassos and newscaster Brooklyn Ross were less supportive, which annoyed Sandilands who dismissed their views as those he’d expect from cynical millennials.

Portelli told Sandilands there was “nothing shady here, mate” after getting some of the negative feedback on social media.

He also clarified that he was not Omar and Oz’s “partner” – as has been widely claimed – but that he had in fact first met them “a few weeks ago” through a mutual friend.

The online promotion guru “wanted the house” and was willing to spend a lot for it, but stepped back when Wallis let his “emotions and ego” take over.

Portelli, who runs the Little Legends Foundation for underprivileged children, also revealed that he planned to “give the house away” if he won the auction.

But this remark didn’t go down well with Ross, who interrupted him with the question, “If you were going to give the house away, why not just buy one of the others cheaper?”

Portelli stammered in response, “They… they don’t speak… like, you’ve got a tennis court, you’ve got the pool, you’ve got the golf course, you know?

‘You have all the high-end devices. That’s what people want, that’s what sells. I’m not going to spend $4 million on…’

“But you’d just give it away?” Rose asked.

Portelli brushed off Ross’s question, insisting he was only bidding on the house he found most attractive, adding that “every other contestant” on The Block tried to get him to look at their homes as well.

‘I went and looked at a few and’ [they] didn’t appeal to me,” he said.

KIIS FM guest booker Hassos then pressed Portelli for more information on how long he had known about Omar and Oz’s home, but Sandilands closed the question.

“These millennials are always looking for trouble,” he said.

Moments later, Portelli made a rather telling comment about what happened on auction day, which caught the attention of Hassos.

“If Danny hadn’t bid, I’d be tied to the house. You know what I mean? No dummy bidding here. All intentional,” he said.

Hassos then warned Sandilands by typing on the studio’s main screen, “Stuck with???”

Sandilands asked her to explain her problem with the term “stuck,” which some say suggests he never wanted the house.

“Do you still think this is some kind of straw man arrangement?” he asked.

“I just thought ‘stuck to the house’ might not be the best word…” Hassos replied, prompting co-host Henderson to ask the burning question, “Did you really want the house?”

“It was a good promotional tool for my company,” he replied.

Ross doubled down on his earlier observation, saying that buying one of the other houses would also have been a “good promotional tool.”

He also said the five renovated houses were “quite similar,” so logically you’d buy the cheapest if your goal was to just “give it away.”

Sandilands then unleashed profanity against Ross and Hassos, calling them quintessential millennials.

Portelli concluded by saying that he would have blown Wallis “out of the water” had he really wanted the house.
