England fans have taken to social media in response to Gareth Soutgate’s latest Three Lions squad, with the omission of Raheem Sterling and the inclusion of Harry Maguire being the biggest grievances among supporters.

The England manager announced his squad for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and the 150th anniversary match with Scotland on Thursday, with some notable headline choices.

Southgate gave the first call-ups to Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, but there was no room for Blues striker Sterling, despite his impressive start under Mauricio Pochettino.

Sterling, who has scored twice in three games since the start of the season, has missed the two England sides through injury and has now been left out of Southgate’s plans as he focuses on most of the side getting off to a strong start to their EC. Qualifying campaign 2024.

However, the omission of Sterling did not go down well with England fans online, who took to Twitter to express their frustration at the decision.

Fans took to Twitter to question Gareth Southgate’s decision not to include Sterling in his squad

“It’s sad how you call Maguire and leave Sterling out.” Read one message, added; Southgate is more than a clown. Unfair to Sterling, the best winger in the league.’

While another was more to the point by posting; “How is it that Raheem Sterling didn’t end up in the England squad?”

Many fans were unhappy with Southgate’s reasoning behind the inclusion of Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips, who are yet to play for their clubs this season, against more form players like Sterling.

One fan suggested that Sterling should still be involved if the England boss takes past showings for this country into account. To post; “I’m a big fan of Southgate, and Maguire has been excellent for England too.

BUT how Phillips still ends up in the squad I have no idea – Ward-Prowse definitely should be. Sterling has only played one good game but if Maguire is present in England’s previous form then Sterling should be too.’

Another fan agreed and also disagreed with Southgate’s reasoning. He wondered why he would use the same names but not the Chelsea winger.

They said, ‘Let me just be clear about Southgate’s explanation of why Sterling was left out. He doesn’t believe anyone from the attack deserves to be dropped. The same man who picked Maguire, Phillips and Rashford. Absolute BS’.

There were even some allegations of favoritism from some quarters, with Southgate accused of being biased towards his senior players and viewing others as more deserving.

“I’ve been saying for years that Southgate is NOT the man for this job.” Read the message.

‘A team with so much quality and you are far from participating in major tournaments. So glad Eddie was part of the squad but took Maguire, Henderson and left White, Sterling, etc at home. The bias smacks.”

Others took the more traditional route and simply placed a crying emjoi next to the statement “No Raheem Sterling.”
