The best ship for every Starfield player

To elect the best ship in the world Starfield is one of the most important decisions you will make. It's not just your way to quickly travel across the galaxy. It's everything from your storage space to your crew's quarters to the thing that protects you from space pirates. In other words, your ship is your ship At home.

It is virtually impossible to get the best ship Starfield early, thanks to prohibitively expensive sticker prices. Also keep in mind that to pilot ships higher than class A, you will need to invest points in the Skill as a pilot (which requires destroying enemy ships, which in itself requires a better ship).

Still, you will get enough money and skill points in the short term Starfield, which should open up your options soon. Without further ado, these are the best ships of Starfieldincluding the best class C shipthe best free shipand the best ship to buy.

And if you want to adjust them to make them equal betterOur guide to using the Ship Builder can help you, and will teach you where to buy ship modules for even wider customization.

Best ship for beginners: Razorleaf

How to get it: Complete the side mission 'Mantis'
Cost: Free

Fairly early in your playthrough you'll probably pick up a note titled “Secret Outpost!” of a dead Spacer. I found it during the mission 'The Old Neighborhood', while searching for the whereabouts of Vanguard Moara. Head to the secret outpost on Denebola Ib and you'll begin a quest titled 'Mantis'.

Spoilers aside, it's one of the best side quests ever Starfieldyou will be rewarded with immensely powerful armor, along with the Razor blade – one of the best Class A ships in the game for anyone with a fairly low level. It has a cargo hold with room for 420kg of gear, so a slight downgrade from the Frontier's 495, but with almost three times the fuel and 100% higher hull protection, along with more powerful weapons, it's a no-brainer. Especially since it has a shielded cargo hold with a capacity of 160 people, essential for smuggling contraband.

Best Free Ship: Kepler R

How to get it: Complete the side mission 'Overdesigned'
Cost: Free

After the main mission 'Starborn', hang around Constellation HQ and talk to Walter. You get the side quest 'Overdesigned', which sends you to the Stroud-Eklund offices to consult with company executives about designing the new starship. Instinct would advise you to choose ideas based on what you think would be best in a ship. Do not do that. Instead, literally validate everyone's ideas. That will reward you with the best free ship in the game. (See our video walkthrough above for the detailed quest steps for 'Overdesigned'.)

If you do it right, you get the Kepler R – a Class C ship with some truly crazy stats: six crew, 28 LY jump range, 805 shield power, 3,500 cargo capacity, and some pretty solid weapons to boot. Yes, the Kepler R looks ridiculous and no, it would never in a million years be sold in a legitimate spaceship market. But who cares about aesthetics, with stats like this and a price of 0 credits?

Best Class A ship: Wanderwell

Image: Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks via Polygon

How to get it: Select the Kid Stuff property
Cost: Free

If you choose the Children's things character trait, your parents are still alive in the game and you can visit them, in exchange for 2% of your credits per week to support them (although that's limited to 500 each time). Give it enough time and eventually your father will give you Class A Wanderwell ship he won while… gambling. I guess that's where the money you send home to help the family goes!

On the plus side, while the Wanderwell doesn't have Shielded Cargo like the Razorleaf, it does have a cargo capacity of 880, making it perfect for carrying all the resources you need to complete side missions. It comes standard with two weapons instead of the standard three, so you'll have to invest a bit to get it fully equipped, but with a jump range of 27 LY, it's the best upgrade after the Razorleaf.

Best Class B Ship: Shieldbreaker

Image: Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks via Polygon

How to get it: Buy from the new Atlantis Ship Services technician
Cost: 265,443 credits

This Class B bad boy costs quite a bit, but if you've prioritized both the main story and the faction affiliate missions (both of which pay more than most side missions) and sold literally everything you've seen, you've probably had enough credits in the bank for the Shieldbreaker. Once you turn your attention to side activities like destroying the Crimson Fleet and transporting thousands of resources across the galaxy, this ship can do it all.

With a crew size of five and a cargo capacity of 2,280 (unfortunately none shielded) there is a lot space here. True to its name, it also has relatively powerful weapons and comes with a laser that automatically targets enemy ships.

Best Class C Ship: Silent Runner

Image: Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks via Polygon

How to get it: Buy from HopeTech Headquarters
Cost: 390,150 credits

Do you want to become a full-time transporter? Look no further than the Silent runner, a class C ship that is essentially the older brother of the Shieldbreaker. While the Shieldbreaker is quite good in combat, the Silent Runner is all about the payload, with a whopping 6,060 cargo space. You can of course upgrade it further with weapons, but this is the one you should choose if you want to become a space truck driver.

On top of the payload, it can jump up to 29 LY and has a hull of 1,164, which is more than enough to hold off any Crimson Fleet or House Va'ruun members that come knocking. It also has a fuel capacity of 300, which can get you almost anywhere in the mapped galaxy.

Best ship to carry cargo: Vanquisher

Image: Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks via Polygon

How to get it: Buy from Stroud-Eklund Showroom in neon
Cost: 335,655 credits

The Victorious is a solid class C all-rounder, with a payload of 4,120, 1,100 fuel and a hull of 908. Where it particularly excels is its missiles, which deal 149 damage, along with its 730 shield. It leaves room to be desired (read: upgraded) in the other weapon categories, but when your missiles do that much damage, it doesn't really matter. Aesthetically speaking, it may not be the most beautiful ship, but in the end you mainly look at the interior.

Best ship for combat: Abyss Trekker

Image: Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks via Polygon

How to get it: Buy from Ship Service Technician in Paradiso
Cost: 347,230 credits

The Abyss Tractor is another Class C ship that is by far the best choice if you plan on doing a lot of dogfights in space. You won't be carrying much loot with this, as it only has 340 cargo capabilities, but you can take out any opponents you encounter thanks to its 100 missiles and 170 ballistic stats.

With a shield of 850 and a hull of 1,031 it will take a lot to get this cyan white ship out of the sky, but if you have to get away, it has 950 fuel and can make a gravity jump up to 25 LY.

Best ship to buy: Narwhal

Image: Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks via Polygon

How to get it: Buy from Taiyo Astroneering in Neon
Cost: 432,620 credits

The Narwhal is perhaps the best – and certainly one of the most expensive – ships in the entire game. This class C blue beast, which will net you over 400,000 credits, is incredibly versatile and can jump up to 30 LY, allowing you to go wherever you please. It can carry up to seven crew members, has 560 fuel, 2,118 hull and 1,760 cargo capacity.

As a result, it does the job of carrying a lot of material (although that's not the best for that), but if you want one ship to do as much as possible instead of switching between ships depending on what the current job is, Narwhal is for you. Special shout out to the 114 ballistics and 82 missiles, because they pack a serious punch.

(Ed. remark: Spoilers follow for the end of Starfield.)

Best New Game Plus Ship: Starborn Guardian

Image: Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks via Polygon

How to get it: Start New Game Plus
Cost: Free

Small spoiler warning for New Game Plus here, so if you want to go in without any knowledge, you can safely stop reading and go for one of the other ships in this guide. However, once you complete the game, New Game Plus will reward you with the Starborn Guardiana class A ship that cannot be bought or stolen during your first playthrough.

The Starborn Guardian is one of the fastest ready-made ships in the game, can jump up to 30 LY and has two unique weapons: the Solar Flare Beam and Gravity Torpedo. With a payload of 950 and a hull of 649, it's one of the best ships in the entire game, especially since you earn an upgraded ship every time you start a new game plus restart. Moreover, it looks incredible: you can't make something like that in the shipbuilder.
