There’s no better action TV today than warrior. Set in late 1800s San Francisco, this martial arts drama follows rival gang wars and the country’s changing landscape through the eyes of Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), a skilled martial artist who moved to the area from China in search of his sister. A lot has changed since then, but the show still reigns.
warrior premiered on Cinemax in 2019, and then Cinemax announced in 2020 that they would no longer be producing their own programming, the future of the show was up in the air. Fortunately, Max decided to take it on, pull the show onto his platform and pick up the third season.
And thank goodness for that, because the show consistently has the best action on television. Koji and Joe Taslim are among the best fencing fighters of their generation, and in addition to their amazing martial arts, the pair exude charisma. Every time they match warriorit’s a can’t-miss event, and the show also brings a host of other talented fighters into the fray, with coordinator Brett Chan delivering beautiful choreography (who earned a 2021 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Stunt Coordination).
The trailer for the new season promises great battles and new alliances, while also giving you a taste of everything that makes warrior nice television. Muscular, sweaty Joe Taslim! Boastful Andrew Koji! Sarcastic Hoon Lee! Grinning Jason Tobin! Tough Olivia Cheng! Mark Freaking Dacascos! Wonderful people doing wonderful things! warrior is back, which gets a resounding “hell yeah” from me.
The third season of warrior premieres June 29 on Max.
