The two men, who bore an uncanny resemblance to their fathers, co-wrote the song, which is a follow-up to James’ song Beautiful, which he co-wrote with Paul.

Sean, 48, is the late icon John’s second child, while James is Paul’s only son and youngest child, whom he welcomed with his late ex-wife Linda Eastman.

‘So no one was going to tell me that Sean Lennon and James McCartney made a song together???; James McCartney and Sean Lennon are out together today on a song, Primrose Hill. It’s actually very sad and beautiful. Why does that feel like a damn good joke?’.

One person who noticed the family resemblance said: “Sean Lennon and James McCartney together are so weird because they look like slightly different versions of their fathers and it scares me.”

James and Sean have both worked as solo artists and this is the first time they have collaborated on a collaboration.

Sean has been involved with several bands including Cibo Matto, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and The Claypool Lennon Delirium.

James has released solo albums and also worked with his parents on projects.

He appeared on Paul’s 1997 album Flaming Pie and his 2001 record Driving Rain. He released Wild Prairie in honor of his mother after her death in 1998.

James marked his return to music this year by releasing the song Beautiful.

In October last year, Paul told how he would have been wracked with guilt if he had not mended his friendship with John before he was killed.

The Beatles legend John was shot dead in 1980 at the age of 40 by unhinged fan Mark Chapman outside his New York City home.

John left The Beatles in 1969 and had become embroiled in legal battles over the band’s back catalogue, causing tension between him and his former songwriter Paul.

In the mid-1970s they rekindled their friendship and Paul spent time at the house John shared in New York with his second wife Yoko Ono.

He admitted he would have been devastated if he had not had the chance to mend the cracks in his relationship with John before he was killed.

Paul said on the McCartney: A Life in Lyrics podcast: ‘In the end I was very happy when he was killed, that I had had a really good time with him before that happened.

“It would have been the worst thing in the world if he had just been murdered and we were still in a bad relationship. That would have been a big guilt trip for me.

‘Luckily we were friendly, we talked about baking bread.

‘You have to remember that I took him to court, and his friends from Liverpool, friends for life, to court. There is still a lot to be done.’
