The airlines most likely to delay holiday flights, according to a new study

Travelers flying to U.S. destinations this holiday season should beware of possible delays with several airlines.

All data for these findings was calculated by the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection October 2024 Consumer report on air travel.

The report is intended to help consumers with information about the quality of airline service, the airline said United States Department of Transportation (DOT).

The flight delays included in the final tables were from major airlines in August 2024.

So when it comes to airlines that may not be the most reliable, here are 10 that the data shows are likely to experience delays from US airports during the holidays.

Travelers flying to their final destinations in the US this holiday season should beware of possible delays with various airlines.

10. United Airlines

The Office of Aviation Consumer Protection concluded that United Airlines is likely to have 74.9 percent of its flights arrive on time.

The percentage was calculated based on 119 of the 342 U.S. airports that sent reports to the Office of Aviation and Consumer Protection.

This number is higher than the rest on the list, but lower than the on-time flight rate published by the government agency in its report. August 2024 Consumer report on air travel.

9. Republic Airways

The chance of a Republic Airways flight delay this holiday season is 74 percent, and reports from 78 airports played a role in the final figure.

It’s not the worst percentage on the list, but it is lower than the on-time flight results of August 2024 and May 2024 Consumer Reports on Air Travel.

8. Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines has received a lot of publicity over the past year due to its aircraft problems.

The on-time flight rate was concluded at 73.8 percent, based on reports submitted by 89 U.S. airports.

This number hardly deviates from the on-time flying percentage of 73.9 concluded in the August report.

Unfortunately, both figures were still a decrease from what used to be 77.4 percent of flights on time.

7. Endeavor sky

Endeavor Air is a subsidiary of Delta Airlines and if the government agency's calculations are correct, 73.5 percent of flights this holiday season will be on time

Endeavor Air is a subsidiary of Delta Airlines and if the government agency’s calculations are correct, 73.5 percent of flights this holiday season will be on time.

This year’s rankings were calculated based on reports from 90 airports in the US.

Unfortunately, this is more than four percent lower than the usual on-time flights from the August 2024 report.

Both percentages were large decreases compared to the on-time flight percentage from the May 2024 report, which was 87.7 percent.

6. Allegiant air

Allegiant Air’s recent on-time flight rate was 73.2 percent, based on reports from 122 airports.

This was a decrease compared to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection’s on-time flight rate results from the May report, which was 75.8 percent.

5. PSA Airlines

PSA Airlines has a 72.5 percent chance of arriving on time, based on reports from 90 U.S. airports

PSA Airlines is a regional airline that operates on behalf of American Airlines and carries ‘American Eagle’ on its aircraft.

The flights also have a 72.5 percent chance of arriving on time, based on reports from 90 U.S. airports.

While the number may not sound bad, it is much lower than the 80.6 percent of on-time arrivals earlier this year.

4. Spirit Airlines

Only 59 U.S. airports sent reports to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection – the fewest locations on this list.

The chance that a Spirit Airlines flight will depart on time this year is 67.1 percent.

The new percentage is much worse than what it was based on an on-time flight departing in June 2024, which was 70.7 percent.

3. US Airlines

American Airlines is likely to have only 66.7 percent of its flights on time this holiday season, based on 124 reports from U.S. airports.

Not only is it the highest U.S. airport number on this list, but it is also among the top five highest reported amounts in the entire study.

2. Border airlines

Frontier Airlines has a history of frequent delays and this year only about 65.2 percent of flights are expected to arrive on time.

This year, 80 airports submitted reports on Frontier Airlines and the number of flight delays starting in August 2024.

Frontier has also faced a number of other issues in addition to delays, and the airline was even named the US airline with the most complaints, according to a 2023 survey conducted by PIRG.

Not only that, Frontier topped the list of flight delays during the holiday season in an analysis conducted by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of Upgraded points tour company last year.

Unfortunately, for JetBlue Airways, the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection has concluded that only 60.75 percent of its flights will arrive on time this holiday season.

The number was calculated based on reports from 66 airports across the country.

The airline has had a habit of being known for these issues, even coming in second for the highest percentage of flight cancellations based on Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) data in 2023 by NerdWallet.
