The action shooter Spine is taking a page out of films like John Wick 4

Spine is an upcoming cyberpunk-style third-person shooter in development at Nekki. As it stands, this sci-fi action title seems poised to make a name for itself using creative camera angles and intimate fight scenes.

The intense, close-quarters ‘Gun fu’ action game follows a rebel named Redline and her physically enhanced spine named Spine (think Sandevistan from Cyberpunk Edgerunners), as she navigates a dystopian, futuristic world ruled by an amoral government that restricts the freedoms of its citizens through violence. As you fight this evil authority, shockwaves will ripple through the streets as you begin to change the lives of your fellow residents for the better.

Currently, Spine is scheduled for release on PS5, Xbox Series|S and PC in 2025 and will contain approximately 12-15 hours of content. However, the long time frame between now and launch means that many of these features may be subject to change.

Before we saw the exciting new trailer for Spine at the PC Gaming Show, Ny Breaking Gaming (TRG) got access to some of Spine‘s most exciting levels, and we also had the chance to talk to the developers and discuss what it was like to create an aggressive yet beautiful action game.

In the heart of the action

The developers at Nekki emphasized this again and again Spine makes players feel like they are in the middle of a high-stakes action movie. It is inspired by various pop culture films and shows, such as Break bad or John Wick 4. For example, the brilliant overhead fight scene from the latest version John Wick film clearly inspired one of Spine‘s own mission sequences.

We were shown three missions that players will encounter Spine. While the second two were somewhat rough around the edges, with lights and distant buildings yet to be built, the first mission highlighted everything this third-person shooter could be.

Set in a towering cityscape, the environment is littered with neon signs and cybernetic creations that you would respect in a cyberpunk setting. As you walk along a tightrope platform from one giant glass building to another, you come across a small bar hidden in what looks like a crack in the wall.

Instead of having a drink in peace, as soon as you enter the bar you’re jumped by several mafia guys who decide it’s a good time to pick a fight. Confined to a small space, you must use your environment to make quick work of these aggressors. Throwing chairs, blinding your attackers with your trusty spray can and dishing out some exciting finishing kills are just some of the ways you can dish out pain in this action game.

However, you don’t just have to worry about the mafia during your travels; there are also government police and yakuza, all of whom will prove to be worthy opponents. Fortunately, Spine allows you to improve your skills, learn new skills, and complete kills – all designed to provide a sense of progress.
