The action director everyone should know is so, so back
Timo Tjahjanto is a gift. The Indonesian director has built a career on propulsive, relentless action films in all price ranges of films. The night comes for us was a big breakout hit for Netflix, landing him a deal that has made him a modest star on the platform — and his next thriller is coming to the platform this fall. If you like sword fights, tight hallway battles, chaotic shootouts, and other murder-revenge movies, The Shadow Gets Lost should be on your radar.
Indonesian actress Aurora Ribero plays 13, a member of the assassin organization known as “The Shadows.” During a break, she befriends a young boy who recently lost his mother to a crime syndicate. When the boy disappears, 13 springs into action — but finds herself in conflict with The Shadows. Slicing, dicing, and skull-cracking ensues.
The first teaser for The Shadow Gets Lostpremiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, is all adrenaline, as it should be. Ribero seems to have gone full Keanu, transforming himself into a roaring martial arts machine. And it all seems true to Tjahjanto’s style. The director has oscillated between the ’80s HK action-retrospective vibes of The night comes for us to cover up the horror in May the devil take you And V/H/S/94 and crazy comedy in the recent Netflix series The Big 4but its common thread is his dedication to angular filmmaking and expert choreography in the action genre. The Shadow Gets Lost stays on course.
Tjahjanto feels ready for a big breakthrough, and if The Shadow Gets Lost isn’t exploding on Netflix, his next move might: David Leitch and his 87North action studio tapped Tjahjanto to direct the upcoming sequel Nobody 2 with Bob Odenkirk. The best in the business have taken notice — you should too.
The Shadow Gets Lost premieres on Netflix on October 17.
