The 2025 Golden Globes nominations have been announced and I can’t believe Netflix’s Emilia Perez is the most nominated movie or TV show this year
As we approach the final weeks of 2024, you can smell awards season from miles away. Following the unveiling of the 2025 Golden Globes nominations, I’m curious to see which new movies and shows from the top streaming services will win the biggest awards. With titles from Netflix, Hulu and Mubi leading the way, this year’s group of potential winners reflects what a huge year it has been in entertainment.
The Golden Globes 2025 nominations livestream, hosted by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut, will feature a host of films and shows, including The fabric, slow horses, And Squid game were among the incredibly diverse selection of titles to be honored at next year’s ceremony, which takes place on January 6.
But I want to say one thing, and it’s not a good thing. Netflix’s musical drama Emilia Perez With ten nominations, it easily surpassed this year’s selection – and considering I gave it a less-than-pleasant review in my Letterboxd diary, to say I’m shocked it racked up so many nominations is an understatement
This is clear to me from my scathing 2.5 star review Emilia Perez is not the movie of the year. That’s reflected in the high volume of reviews one of November’s new Netflix movies also received, but the Golden Globe Foundation seems to love it. On paper, a musical crime drama about a cartel boss’s gender transition not only sounds incredibly exciting, but could also make for a compelling and inspiring story. However, the unhinged musical numbers diminished the sincerity of the story and made me laugh at the characters rather than their individual and collective problems.
What pushed me over the edge, however, was that the overstuffed story, consisting of three different storylines, becomes more and more bizarre as the film progresses. This is on top of Selena Gomez’s unfortunate acting (at least in my opinion), which did little to allay my concerns that it’s a very disjointed film and that’s what mainly causes my shock at the Golden Globes 2025 nod. You and I will see if it somehow has the pizzazz to win multiple awards at next year’s glitzy awards event.
