Matty Healy confused fans when The 1975 claimed the star was eating a phone on stage during their Chicago performance on Monday.
Unphased, his mother, Denise Welch, 65, joked about the singer’s shocking act on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Matty, 34, was captured on the edge of the stage as he appeared to bite chunks out of a light blue phone.
But upon closer inspection, Matty wasn’t consuming the electronic device – just a sweet treat disguised as a cell phone.
The disguise consisted of a light blue fondant wrapped around a thin chocolate sponge with a creamy white filling.

The 1975 posted a photo of the star on X with the caption: ‘Matty Healy eating a phone. Yes.’
Although the video has been viewed more than 620,000 times, fans were quick to point out that the clever stunt was in fact just a chocolate treat.
One fan wrote: ‘The show is so weird tonight. At least it’s not raw steak. Looks like a Pop Tart.’
Another wrote: ‘The inside looks like cookies and cream, and the outside looks like some kind of fondant icing that is then painted with edible paint to mimic the look of an iPhone.’
But Loose Women star Denise seemed to enjoy joining in on the joke as she retweeted the message with the caption: ‘Hope he didn’t leave one. He wasn’t raised that way.”
The band is currently touring America and will take center stage in Britain in February 2024.
It comes just weeks after Matty publicly apologized again for his controversial behavior after being accused of making racist and misogynistic comments.
Earlier this year, the 1975 frontman sparked controversy when questionable comments surfaced after dating Taylor Swift.

His shocking comments included saying he liked to masturbate to videos of women being “abused” and racist impressions of rapper Ice Spice.
The singer has addressed his comments about recent tours.
At his band’s concert at the Hollywood Bow, Matty – who recently announced his band would be taking an “indefinite hiatus” – apologized again as he revealed he had been trying on the role of a “21st century rock star” to play.
He told the crowd: “Because some of my actions hurt some people, I apologize to those people, and I promise to do better in the future.
‘I think it is also important that I make my intentions known, so that everyone knows that I have no ill will. You see, as an artist I want to create an environment for myself to perform where not everything I do is taken literally…
‘I’ve played exaggerated versions of myself on other stages, whether in print or on podcasts, and in an often misguided attempt to fill the character role of the 21st century rock star – so it’s complicated.
“Sometimes the only way to really find out who you are is to pretend, and you could probably say that men would rather do offensive impressions to get attention than go to therapy.”
