The last thing a motorist wants is to own a lemon from a car that is constantly breaking down and costing an arm and a leg in repeated garage bills, especially with a cost of living crisis.

Fortunately, we can tell you exclusively which brands you can rely on.

A new report shared with This is Money has listed the brands that stand the test of time better than other manufacturers.

Extended vehicle warranty provider, Warrantywise, has provided us with the top 10 trusted brands based on data for over 130,000 cars – and it’s the East Asian manufacturers that dominate.

Most Trustworthy Car Brands: Honda tops the charts with an incredible reliability score of 96.8/100 in Warrantywise's Reliability Index

Most Trustworthy Car Brands: Honda tops the charts with an incredible reliability score of 96.8/100 in Warrantywise’s Reliability Index

The best performing brands are collected in the company’s Reliability Index.

This ranks each car on a combination of factors, including the cost to make repairs, how often they encounter problems, and how many days it takes to fix them.

The data only represents cars that are out of their factory warranty, meaning the minimum age for the sample is three years old. The maximum age for cars included in the analysis is 10 years.

Data collected from 131,000 policies between 2021 and 2022 has placed Honda at the top of the charts with an incredible overall reliability score of 96.8/100.

“Honda’s solid reputation for being ultra-reliable seems unwavering, and as evidenced by previous news updates, the Honda Jazz was voted the most reliable used car in this year’s Reliability Index,” said Warrantywise.

And it is the Japanese and Korean brands that continue to lead by example, taking the top five places in terms of reliability.

Toyota finished a close second with an overall score of 91.2/100, followed by Suzuki and Kia, while Hyundai rounded out the top five East Asian reliability acquisitions.

Surprisingly, Fiat, Citroën and Renault represent sixth through eighth places, which could dispel the preconceptions that these European brands don’t build the most reliable vehicles.

The two remaining places in the top 10 are secured by Mazda and Ford.

Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of Warrantywise said: ‘As the cost of living continues to rise, it is important to put things like reliability first when choosing a used car to buy.

“By collecting all this data and putting it together in an index like this, we can help our customers move forward with their purchases by arming them with information to try and lighten the burden as much as possible.

“Consumers keep their vehicles longer and we can give them a guarantee to avoid large sums at once if something goes wrong.”

And earlier this year, the Warranytwise Reliability Index named it the most robust of all used cars, with an impressive overall rating of 93.7/100.

With average repair costs in 2021 of just £424.31, Honda’s reputation for making renowned motorcycles remains strong.

Warrantywise’s model reliability index ranked the Mazda 2 second and the Toyota Auris third.

The Mazda MX-5 comes fourth, the Toyota Aygo fifth, the Kia Ceed and Rio sixth and seventh respectively, the Suzuki Alto eighth, the Hyundai i20 ninth.

It shows that Japanese and Korean brands dominate at the model level as well.

The only non-East Asian car company to enter the top 10 was Peugeot, as its 107 city car took last place in the model order.

Mr Whittaker added: ‘It’s not surprising to see Honda top the list given how reliable its cars have proven time and time again, with our reliability index results.

‘The reliability index is such a great tool for us to be able to evaluate the market and help our customers make the right choice for them when it comes to deciding which car to buy; especially now that parts and labor costs are rising and people are really looking for the best options to meet their needs.”
