Officials from government road authority KazAvtoJol blamed failure to adhere to speed limits and safe distancing for the massive crash.
Drivers were advised to avoid journeys due to the treacherous weather conditions.
After the incident, about thirty motorists managed to get their cars out of the highway hell and continue driving.
Authorities have since removed another 14 damaged cars, but more than 50 are still trapped.
