Tottenham fans were in for a heart-in-mouth moment on Thursday afternoon when their phones pinged.

A notification from the club’s official app read: ‘Our home league match with Liverpool has been rescheduled.’

More than a few were concerned that Spurs had agreed to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s request to replay last Saturday’s controversial encounter.

Luis Diaz saw a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed for offside after a colossal error by the Video Assistant Referees.

Amid a storm of controversy, Klopp suggested the fairest solution was to replay the match, which Liverpool lost 2-1, in its entirety.

That seemed like wishful thinking, but many believed this had been a dramatic development in the saga when the push notification disappeared on Thursday.

But further investigation revealed that the warning related to a new date for the Women’s Super League match between the same two clubs.

The Spurs vs Liverpool WSL match at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road ground on Sunday, November 12 has been selected for live coverage on BBC Two, meaning the match starts at 12.30pm.

“I fell off my chair,” one Spurs fan admitted, while another tweeted “heart was in my mouth” and another “causing me to have a mild heart attack.”

“They knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they worded that push notification, lol,” said another.

Darren England was the VAR official responsible for the error during Saturday night’s Premier League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He has been criticized for his ‘critical lapse of concentration’ and prioritizing ‘efficiency over accuracy’ in a hard-hitting report by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the referees’ organisation.

They said he had rushed a routine situation and “inexplicably” disallowed Diaz’s goal, clouding judgment on the field.

Assistant VAR Dan Cook was also criticized for a lack of basic communication, which was exposed by audio of the decision-making process released to the public.
