Teyana Taylor confirms ‘heartbreaking’ divorce from Iman Shumpert as she asks for ‘privacy’ in order to ‘protect’ their two daughters

Teyana Taylor confirmed the news of her divorce from husband Iman Shumpert after seven years of marriage.

The 32-year-old singer took her with her Instagram stories on Friday to share her feelings about the divorce proceedings and her reaction afterward TMZ reported that she quietly filed divorce papers last January.

After admitting that she was a very “private” person, Teyana insisted that she had refrained from commenting on the divorce as a way to “protect” her family.

The “Wake Up Love” hitmaker — who shares two daughters, Iman “Junie” Tayla, 7, and Rue Rose, 3, with the NBA star — also called the situation “heartbreaking.”

She concluded by asking for privacy for her family to “resolve this matter peacefully.”

The full statement reads: ‘I mind my business, don’t bother anyone and you know I have never played about my children, family and our privacy. I have not discussed this private matter with any media, blogs, etc.

“So anyone who claims ‘Teyana said’ did not get any statements directly from ME. These statements are taken from private court documents that have been leaked to the public. It is very heartbreaking that anyone would take the time to make such a private matter public for the world to see.

“However, protecting my family is something I have ALWAYS done and for my children I will continue to do so. If you all love playing nieces Junie and Rue as you all have shown, please give me and my family some privacy to resolve this matter in peace, I love you all.”

The Harlem, New York, native, who filed divorce papers in January, announced her divorce from Shumpert last September.

In the legal documents, the White Men Can’t Jump actress said the relationship was doomed by Shumpert’s insecurity about their respective levels of fame and whether he was “good enough for her.”

Taylor accused Shumpert in court of “treating her cruelly and exhibiting extremely narcissistic behavior throughout most of their marriage.”

She said Shumpert “became increasingly angry” at her fame, and would grill her about it and provoke arguments via text messages, later saying he was sorry, in a toxic and repetitive cycle.

Taylor said the relationship had deteriorated so much in 2022 that she filed for divorce, then asked her lawyers to withdraw her filing the next day. She told the court that by the time 2023 came around, she was “unable to handle the emotional rollercoaster” and decided to go through with the divorce.

In confirming their divorce in September after seven years of marriage, Taylor said infidelity was not the cause of the breakup, but took a different tack in her divorce papers, saying Shumpert had cheated on her.

Iman’s attorney Stephen C. Steele told TMZ on Thursday: “Mr. Shumpert hopes that parties and lawyers can work towards a fair solution, where the interests of the children come first.’

In April, Taylor denied rumors circulating on TikTok that she had suffered a drug overdose after learning that Shumpert had been unfaithful to her.

Taylor and Shumpert first met at a party in 2011 before becoming romantically involved in 2014. They got engaged in 2015 — the same year they welcomed daughter Junie — and exchanged vows in late 2016.
