Texas woman killed after making terrible mistake when tornado struck her home

A Texas woman tragically died after taking shelter in a trailer when a devastating tornado struck.

Jamie Brown, 46, lost her life Saturday after an EF-2 tornado touched down in Alvin, about 40 minutes outside of Houston.

Jamie’s wife Stafnie Brown said her partner was preparing lunch in her caravan when the cyclone hit, forcing her to take cover there.

While Stafnie sat with her mother in another mobile home, her wife of six years was thrown about 30 meters away when the storm launched her caravan into the air.

After the tornado blew through, Stafnie frantically went outside to look for Jamie.

‘I searched and I searched and I screamed, and I searched and I screamed. I walked that way, and then I found her,” Stafnie said KHO 11.

The heartbroken woman said she found Jamie face up in a puddle after being thrown from the trailer into the wreckage.

‘I tried to revive her, but she was already gone. She was ravaged by stuff and the house,” she added.

Stafnie said just 10 minutes before the deadly tornado struck, their family, who all lived in the country, received alerts on their phones.

She believes her mother’s house collided with the caravan Jamie was in, leading to her wife’s death.

“I think my mom’s house hit their house, tore it down, and I think the tornado picked it up,” she told the outlet.

“From what I understand, he picked it up whole, threw it there, dropped it and exploded.”

The widow now has to cope not only with the loss of her home, but also the love of her life, whom she says she married 28 days after they met.

“I think she’ll be there when I wake up, but she’s not,” Stafnie said KTRK.

Despite losing Jamie, she said her wife wishes she could move on from the horrific tragedy.

‘I’m devastated. “I mean, I can’t do anything, but I can keep going and going because that’s what she would want me to do,” she said.

A total of seven people – all family members – lived on the property, which has since been left in ruins as a result of the tornado.

Erica Ackerman was one of four who were not home at the time, but when she returned, her house was gone.

“We’re all lost and numb and it’s really hard to process, like I know it’s real, I can tell it’s real, but still sometimes it doesn’t feel real,” Erica said.

She told KHOU11 that the trailer she shares with her husband Billie Foster, Stafnie’s brother, survived several hurricanes prior to the cyclone.

“I survived three hurricanes and then a tornado came and took everything.

“It still doesn’t even feel real. It does, but it doesn’t, and it’s still trying to process everything,” Erica said.

Billy said that despite having insurance on their home, the company “refused to help the couple” after the last two storms, including Hurricane Harvey.

“Our house is now behind the neighbor’s house, completely torn to nothing,” Billy added.

Erica has one GoFundMe page to help the family raise money after the horrific event.

“Six of us have been displaced and we have lost everything, including a dear family member. We have to start all over again,” she wrote.

More than $4,400 was raised to help the family Monday morning.

Four others were injured during Saturday’s storms, but officials said they were left with non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Red Cross are currently working on full damage assessments, a spokesperson for the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office told KHOU11.

Rare tornadoes in December have ripped through the South, with 40 reported from Texas to Alabama over the Christmas season.

Severe weather also increased in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama this weekend.
