Texas Rangers Josh Smith is taken to hospital after being hit in the FACE by a brutal 89 MPH pitch by Orioles pitcher Danny Coulombo

Texas outfielder Josh Smith has been taken to a hospital after being hit in the face by a pitch Monday night in the Rangers’ game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Smith, a left-handed batter, was hit on the right side of his face in the third inning by an 1-0 slider by reliever Danny Coulombo.

Smith spun back to the left and fell to the dirt in the batter’s box, breaking his fall with his left hand while holding his face with his right.

The Rangers said Smith, who started in left field, went to a hospital for tests on his face and jaw.

Coulombo was pitching as Orioles starter Kyle Bradish took off after being hit on his right foot by a line drive in the second inning. Baltimore announced that Bradish has a bruised foot.

Jonah Heim ran a 2-2 switch back to the mound—the exit speed measured at 104 mph—with runners in first and second and one out.

The ball hit Bradish on the outside of the foot as he completed his pass.

The ball rolled to first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who tagged as the runners advanced.

Manager Brandon Hyde and a team trainer were visiting Bradish, who was running on the back of the mound.

Hyde then pulled Bradish, who was able to walk to the dugout. Coulombo entered and struckout Brad Miller to end the inning.
