  • The extraordinary discovery was made by a local fisherman at Lake o’ the Pines
  • Photos show that the car was almost completely submerged and only the roof was visible
  • Police have not yet identified the woman, but say it was an accident

Police pulling a sinking jeep from a Texas lake found a woman alive inside, two days after she went missing.

The miraculous discovery was made by a local fisherman at Lake o’ the Pines on Friday after seeing the vehicle almost completely submerged in the water.

Photos from the scene show that only the roof of the car was visible.

Police said it was unclear how long the woman had been in the water, but it is locally suggested she was trapped in her car overnight.

The woman’s identity, condition and circumstances of her disappearance have not been made public.

Deputies and a local salvage agency saw a woman moving in the vehicle as they prepared to retrieve it from the lake, according to the Marion County Sheriff Office.

While the woman was rescued and taken to a local hospital, she was determined to be on the Longview Texas Police Department’s missing persons list.

She had been reported missing several hours earlier at 12:35 a.m. in Longview, a town about 25 miles southwest of the lake.

Justen Hollis, of Longview, said on Facebook that his colleague was the fisherman who found the vehicle, adding that ‘she had been there since last night’.

Commentators took to social media to express their surprise at the discovery.

Rebekah Lee Butler said, “Praise God! Thank you to all involved. That’s great that she survived and that rescuers were able to reach her in time.’

Others speculated on divine intervention. Brooke Drake wrote, “What are the odds there was an air pocket big enough to last who knows how long? What is the chance that the police will respond quickly to a car that is under water? This is just a miracle.’

Melissa Dobbs, a records manager for the Longview Police Department, told me NPR they could not yet release any further information “given the details of this case.”

The sheriff’s department said it found nothing suspicious about how the jeep ended up in the lake.

It was discovered about 40 feet away from a boat ramp, but Captain Chuck Rogers of the Marion County Sheriff Office said, “Nothing was discovered during the investigation to suggest that this case was more than an accident.”
