Tesla recalls more than 1.8million vehicles in America over risk of software failure

Tesla is recalling nearly two million vehicles in the United States over concerns about a software bug that could fail to detect an unlocked hood, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday.

An unlocked hood can open fully and obstruct the driver’s view, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects certain 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles.

Tesla, founded by Elon Musk, released an over-the-air software update to fix the problem, NHTSA added. Musk, who has been vocal about the U.S. presidential election on his social media platform recently, has not yet commented on the recall.

In December 2023, Tesla recalled numerous vehicles due to concerns raised by the NTHSA about its autopilot technology. However, there were still 20 Tesla-related crashes between January and April 2024, prompting a new investigation, Spotlight on America defeated.

The Spotlight on America report states that the NHTSA is also investigating Ford’s BlueCruise autopilot feature amid concerns after a number of fatal crashes.

Tesla will replace the wiper motor free of charge for owners, who will be notified by letter on August 18th.

The problems for the electronic car brand extend beyond this recent recall.

Tesla has recalled the Cybertruck with stainless steel cladding four times since it went on sale on Nov. 30.

The new recalls, published in documents by NHTSA in June, each affect more than 11,000 trucks.

The company notes in the documents that the windshield wiper motor controller may stop working because it is receiving too much electrical current.

A broken windshield wiper can reduce visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. The Austin, Texas, company says it has not reported any crashes or injuries caused by the problem.
