The Brantas train of the Indonesian Railway Company (KAI) was on its way to Blitar in East Java when it crashed in Semarang City on Tuesday night.
The truck was dragged on the track and caught fire when it crashed into a bridge in Semarang City, Indonesia
Investigators said the truck’s engine stalled while it was on the level crossing.
The driver had left looking for help shortly before the oncoming 626-passenger train hit the vehicle.
The crew member from the train also managed to escape.
Senior Commissioner Irwan Anwar, Chief of Police Semarang City, said, “This truck suddenly broke down on the rails.
‘Then the driver and the traffic controller managed to ask for help from the guard who guarded the level crossing, but the train was already approaching.’
After the front of the train went up in flames, it continued for a few more yards before coming to a stop. Pools of fire and sparks surrounded the wreckage as authorities responded to the incident
The police chief added: “The train driver and crew jumped off the train after making sure everything was safe. Only one passenger suffered minor injuries from falling while jumping from the train.’
A spokesperson for KAI said train traffic had resumed as normal from Wednesday following checks by railway companies.
Ixfan Hendri Wintoko, KAI’s PR manager for Operational Area 4, told local media: “We will calculate the total loss and we will ask the truck driver for compensation.”
