The small cargo plane nose-dived in Londonderry on Friday morning and crashed into the ground shortly after taking off from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

The pilot was seriously injured and taken to hospital for treatment, but officials say it is a miracle the plane did not catch fire as there was about 250 liters of fuel on board.

It is not clear what caused the crash, but the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

Video of the crash shows sparks flying as the plane crashes through trees on its way to the ground and loud booms can be heard.

Neighbors ran outside and came to the pilot’s aid after hearing the loud crash.

“He was pinned against the dashboard trying to get his belt off. He was a little bit, it seemed like maybe he had changed a little bit,” Brian Croteau said NBC Boston.

“He was a little bit, it seemed like maybe he had changed a little bit. He couldn’t really understand what he was saying, he was mumbling, it looks like he hurt his face quite a bit.”

Emergency services arrived on the scene within minutes of receiving a report of the incident and the pilot was rushed to hospital.

“They basically had to pry the plane open, like a car accident, to try to get him out,” Eddie Saktanaset said.

Fire officials said the pilot was conscious during the ordeal and even called 911 himself after the crash.

“He should definitely hit the lottery. “Many more things could have gone wrong than just the plane crashing,” said Fire Chief Bo Butler.

Photos from the scene show the wreckage of the cargo plane still strewn across the ground.
