Terrified single mother flees home in Minneapolis just days after moving there from California after witnessing two shootings in crime-ridden city that left one man dead

  • Lecretia Anderson said the gunfire included a bullet that shattered the glass door of her apartment as her son took a bath Sunday
  • That came after a 21-year-old was fatally shot outside a building near her new home. It convinced her to find another location on Friday
  • ‘I can’t possibly go back. There is no way I would ever feel safe in that area if I even went back,” Anderson said

A single California mother who hadn’t finished unpacking her new home in Minneapolis is already trying to move after witnessing two shootings in the city during her first weekend there.

Lecretia Anderson said the gunfire included a bullet that shattered the glass door of her apartment as her son took a bath Sunday.

‘We could both have been affected by a situation that we had nothing to do with. It literally has nothing to do with innocent bystanders,” she said, as she was left with shards of glass on her.

That came after a 21-year-old was fatally shot outside a building near her new home. It convinced her to find another location on Friday.

‘I can’t possibly go back. There is no way I would ever feel safe in that area if I even went back,” Anderson said.

“It’s not as safe as I expected, especially as a single mother of a young son,” she added.

Both shootings occurred in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood, where more than 1,000 calls for shots fired have been received so far in 2023.

While that has decreased from this point in 2022, assaults, sex crimes, motor vehicle thefts and vandalism have still increased in the county, police said. the city’s statistics.

For Anderson, seeing multiple shootings in one weekend when he moved there was nothing short of stunning.

“The movers came maybe three or four days ago. “There was a lot of stuff in boxes on the floor, I never got a chance to unpack it and this happened,” Anderson added.

“I grabbed our bags that we had packed from our flights here. “I said, ‘Let’s go,’” she said.

One of the bullets hit a sprinkler system in her apartment, causing minor water damage.

A community member has one Spot fund for Anderson to help them find a new place to live. They hope to raise $10,000.

“I wasn’t able to save much after the apartment was appraised,” Anderson wrote.

“Right now it’s a total loss. We lost everything. We just moved here from California three weeks ago, no family, no friends, no support whatsoever.”

She added that the manager assured her the neighborhood was safe.

Minneapolis police said Monday they will increase the presence of officers in the area and deploy “special units” to the area. KSTP reported.

Water restoration crews were seen outside the apartment that same day working on the sprinkler.
