Barely resembling the boxer who dominated Josh Taylor for his 140-pound title in June, Teofimo Lopez was fortunate to improve to 20-1 with a unanimous victory over challenger Jamaine Ortiz on Thursday in Las Vegas.

Fight fans at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas kicked off Thursday’s WBO junior welterweight title fight by cheering Lopez’s name (“Teo! Teo! Teo!) before booing the defending champion in the sixth round of his clownish, lackluster performance.

He then responded to the boos after the controversial win, telling angry spectators: “Suck ad*** no-homo!”

It was unfortunately the perfect ending to a deplorable performance from someone considered one of boxing’s greatest talents.

The immediate fallout from Lopez’s win was a departure from his previous two wins, but no less bizarre.

After escaping with a questionable split-decision win over Sandor Martin in 2022, an emotional Lopez was seen asking him, “Do I still have it?”

But Lopez left no doubt against Josh Taylor in June 2023, when he won the WBO junior welterweight title by unanimous decision at the Madison Square Garden theater. Only in the aftermath of this victory did the overjoyed Lopez drop a surprise retirement announcement on the media.

Reporters didn’t believe Lopez and they were proven right when he announced his fight with Ortiz – a natural lightweight from Worcester, Massachusetts, best known for beating Jamel Herring and losing to Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2022.

Beforehand, Keyshawn Davis dismantled José Pedraza before getting a stoppage midway through the sixth round.

Davis was mated for two rounds before finally reaching Pedraza in the third round with a series of body blows along the ropes.

Pedraza would later take consecutive rights to the temple in the center of the ring before lowering his head and going into full defensive mode to survive the round.

But it wasn’t until the sixth that Davis unleashed his full fury on Pedraza, who looked at least 34 years old. The fight was stopped when Pedraza’s defense began to suffer from a brutal barrage from Davis.

Some fans online criticized the stoppage, but in addition to taking a serious beating, Pedraza also appeared to have a significant cut on the right side of his face.

Davis, 24, improves to a perfect 10-0 and looks to enter the title picture at 135 pounds.

“I’m the best at 135,” said Davis, who credited quitting marijuana with his recent success.

Then he called the headliner, Lopez, into the ring: “Teofimo, you already know I’m coming! You and your father. Let’s settle it.’

Davis even went so far as to say he was willing to fight Lopez at junior welterweight.

“I’m coming straight to 140,” Davis said. ‘Let’s go!’
