Tennant Creek hit by 3.4 magnitude Northern Territory earthquake

A small town in the middle of the Northern Territory has been hit by an earthquake.

The 3.4 magnitude quake struck northeast of Tennant Creek at around 10:22 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

Geoscience Australia recorded the earthquake as occurring at a depth of six kilometres.

Earthquakes below magnitude 3.5 are often not felt, so the 3,000 residents of Tennant Creek may not have noticed them.
