Ten killed in Kenya as truck crashes into pedestrians

Police say the accident in the town of Migori happened along a major highway when the driver lost control.

A truck plowed into pedestrians and motorcycle taxis near the Tanzanian border in western Kenya, killing at least 10 people and injuring 10 others.

The accident in the town of Migori happened on Saturday along a major highway when the driver lost control of the wheel.

An operation was underway to free people trapped under the truck, and the death toll is feared to rise, Migori police chief Mark Wanjala said.

Two more people were said to have crossed a bridge and ended up in a river, Wanjala said.

Many Kenyans travel to their rural homes during the Easter holiday and road accidents during the busy season are common.

In January, at least 21 people were killed and 49 others injured when a bus on its way to the capital Nairobi crashed shortly after crossing the border into Uganda.
