TEMPUR Pro Air SmartCool review: MailOnline tests Dreams’ ‘coolest mattress yet’, which uses NASA technology to draw heat away from your body while you sleep

Judgement:

Getting your bed to the perfect temperature is a struggle that many couples face on a regular basis.

But the days of throwing the duvet on and off the bed and arguing over whether or not to open the window could soon be a thing of the past.

Dreams has launched a new ‘cutting-edge’ mattress, which it describes as its ‘coolest yet’.

But does it really regulate your temperature during the night? I put it to the test to find out.

TEMPUR is known for its range of mattresses and pillows using memory foam materials, first invented by NASA in the 1960s.

Memory foam is “viscoelastic,” meaning both fluid and spring-like.

TEMPUR says this is achieved by “billions of ultra-sensitive open cells that exist between a solid and a liquid state.”

However, the formula remains secret: fewer than ten people in the world know how to make it.

TEMPUR’s newest mattress is called the TEMPUR Pro Air SmartCool and is exclusively available through Dreams.

The main body of the mattress is made from a brand new TEMPUR Advanced Material, which provides pressure relief and motion absorption.

However, it’s the new Pro Air SmartCool cover that really does the hard work.

The cover is designed to dissipate heat from your body while you sleep, so you feel cool and fresh all night long.

While this all sounds great in theory, I have to admit I was a little skeptical before putting it to the test.

I usually feel cold at night and keep the duvet pulled up around me, while my partner feels very warm and is the one who insists on having the window open.

For this reason, I wondered if the technology could really help keep us both at an optimal temperature all night long.

The mattress is available in four different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, Medium-Firm and Firm – and I opted for the Medium-Firm option.

As advised by Dreams, we let the mattress rest for a few hours before putting on new sheets and going to sleep.

Having never used a TEMPUR mattress before, the feel of memory foam surprised me.

Although this initially gave the impression of a soft mattress, once I settled into it I was pleased to discover a reassuringly firm feeling beneath my body.

The cooling sensation is unmistakable as soon as you lie down, which my warm-up partner found particularly comforting.

And while this cool feeling fueled my fear of being cold at night, I was pleased to discover that this was not the case at all.

In fact, both my partner and I had a brilliant night’s sleep, with neither of us complaining about the temperature!

The only problem we found with the mattress was keeping the sheet on it.

Over several nights we woke up in the morning to find that the fitted sheet had somehow come loose on one side, leaving the mattress exposed.

Whether this was a problem with the mattress or our sheet remains unclear, although the texture of the mattress cover seems a bit smoother than our previous version.

Fortunately, the cover is removable and washable, so we can easily clean it if it is a particularly warm night.

The real test of its cooling ability will come later this year as temperatures rise, but if we can trust our first impressions, it’s going to be a lovely, cool summer!

The TEMPUR Pro Air Smartcool is now available from To dreamwith prices ranging from £1,549 to £3,449.
